Yesterday , I did a bit of christmas shopping with the wife ,who is American/Italian /Catholic , myself being a tolerant jew 42 years in love with a sicilian woman , I have come to enjoy the celebration . We went to Kohls Targets , and Bealls . I refuse to shop Walmart .
Well as most husbands first order of buisiness was to find a comforatble place to sit down and let the wife do her thing .One problem they dont want anyone sitting down /no benches .So I embarked on an investigation , tag checking merchandise for country of origin .Shirts and genes , jackets , christmas ornaments , bed comforters , slippers , toys ,sport goods ,shoes socks undies , yes even bras and panties [got some stares there ] and came to a sickening but expected conclusion -EVERYTHING made in India /Bangladesh , China ,Thailand , Honduras ,and ...NOTHING in the USA , and anything that had those Grand old letters stated ASSEMBLED or Packaged in the USA , but the manufacture -all the same CHINA etc .etc . As I waited ....and waited the anger built and then turned to sadness as I thought of American towns , their factories empty , all those fellow Americans across the country , all those products no longer made here , jobs evaporated. I've been biching about this back to the days of the bumper stickers which read "Buy American the Job you save may be your own " ...no one listed , my sticker went when the old car went , never bought anything but a Chevy , Ford or Chrysler only to find even there "assembled in Mexico with certain models , Or Canada [which wasn't so painfull since canadiens come and go and spend their money here .] Finally with head down and wallet open we hit the checkout . The ife then said ,we need groceries , my spirits lifted abit ,as I said to myself , ahh , ok ,atleast NOW , I can contribute to some fellow Americans , being the non-participating shopper/payer that I've become in retirement , i headed for my favorites BLACKBERRIES ! Ahh Sunnyvale Farms USA !! That's Florida !! I brought my glasses this time and read the label - "distributed by Sunnyvale Farms Winterhaven FL . PRODUCT OF MEXICO!! People turned as I utterd my favorite sayng these days WTF !! as I sneeringlt tossed the plastic container back into the regreigerated display ........NOW THERE TRICKING ME ! Sunnyvale sells Strawberries and Blueberries FROM here . Well I got the milk eggs and Bread and bacon , feeling a bit better ,all made here .The best way to get a deal is to check the price per ounce , men do these things when retired , so i continued on , and searched oout my favorite cooking ingredient -Garlic Powder ...hmmm Store brand [ Publix ] 9 oz-$.2.99/ Mccormicks - 7oz.-$ 367 / Badillo 5oz- $ 3.73 , I did the math , best buy = Publix 2.99 for 9 oz . I was proud of myself , I saved more than a half-a-buck and I got more product .As I rolled the cart and went to find the wife , I read the label of my new found Bargain . Glasses on the letters in small print jumped out and like a punch in the gut " MADE IN CHINA " !!! , I let out with a loud groan and a desperate WTF scaring the old woman , the haitian stockboy, and the good looking skirt behind me as I tossed the jar into the cereal shelf like a live grenade ! Is it just Me ? Is this what happens after 50 some odd years in the workforce and now as a retiree , I'm starting to lose it ? I put my head down ...Garlic man ! , I'll never ingest GARLIC FROM CHINA ...PERIOD . I went back for the McCormicks muttering " fucking garlic from China " looking for some sort of consensus from another good looking skirt nearby in the spice section . Only to get another dirty look .I looked around and wondered DOES ANYONE KNOW THE STOREBRAND GARLIC IS MADE IN CHINA ???? What about the cereal ?

The brown and yellow people are taking the Murricans jobses. We hates them.

Good grief! If lace can be made in Bangladesh at a tiny fraction of the cost of making it Scranton, PA, then the human community as a whole is better served by having the lace made in Bangladesh. If China can grow garlic cheaper, ditto.

How is the Kansas wheat farmer, or the Illinois heavy machinery factory worker, to be paid by Chinese consumers, if we will not tolerate them selling us stuff? Trade is a two way street.

Whether international trade is good or bad (and there is some of each) it is here to stay.
Where the problems come in IMHO is when attention is only on the price of goods, not the quality, not the questions of humane working conditions and not dumping toxic by-products into the environment (which includes a possible waste of energy in transporting this stuff all over the world) and so on. Eventually most of this will even out as the era of cheap fossil fuels ends and rising standards of living throughout the world put an end to 50 cent/day wages. China is already outsourcing some production because their labor costs have risen.

 Frank says:

I feel it's better to sing about these things ourselves and perform them with the people who it happened to than to have some journalist one day say 'then in 1971, one time when they were at the mudshark hotel...' But people have problems with things of a glandular nature in connection with things of a musical nature. They say why, music is way up here, and glands are way down there and they can't get 'em together, but then they are hypocritical because they take a band that doesn't sing about such things directly and couches their language a little and does it with a little choreography and say that that's great and that's real rock and roll. I maintain that there's no difference, we're just honest enough to get up and say 'this is this and that's that and here you are and respond to it' and the response is 'why... I'm hip, but of course I am offended'.
