Pretty impressive find. Carter's grandson is one hell of a researcher.

Fascinating read- and depressing at the same time.

Post of the day, for sure.

Dear Republicans,

Tell me again how the Southern Strategy is a myth.

No love,

The interview was around in print only. This is the first time you can hear it.

I became aware of it from an op-ed from NYT columnist Bob Herbert:

The Ugly Side of the G.O.P.

By BOB HERBERT

Published: September 25, 2007

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

In one of the vilest moves in modern presidential politics, Ronald Reagan, the ultimate hero of this latter-day Republican Party, went out of his way to kick off his general election campaign in 1980 in that very same Philadelphia, Miss. He was not there to send the message that he stood solidly for the values of Andrew Goodman. He was there to assure the bigots that he was with them.

“I believe in states’ rights,” said Mr. Reagan. The crowd roared.

In 1981, during the first year of Mr. Reagan’s presidency, the late Lee Atwater gave an interview to a political science professor at Case Western Reserve University, explaining the evolution of the Southern strategy:

“You start out in 1954 by saying, ‘n*****, n*****, n*****,’ ” said Atwater. “By 1968, you can’t say ‘n*****’ — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things, and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.”

I missed the 'welfare queens' moment in 1980, so while I first voted four years after that, I wasn't really struck with seeing blatant dishonesty in a presidential campaign until Bush-Dukakis. I couldn't believe how people were able to get away with this kind of thing, how the truth just didn't seem to matter.

This year's campaign felt a lot like 1988 to me.

This is SO worth $1.99.

Would it surprise anyone that Atwater wasn't above a little Jew-baiting, earlier in his career? Or even that the Bush family kept him at a safe distance?

Who holds the black community on welfare [reservations] in the ghetto's of America. ?

Nobody. Welfare enables people to get out of the ghetto when they wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

Who buys votes with Obama phones?

No one. The program was started in its modern form under Reagan.

Who is in charge of the [education] or lack of it in America?

Congress, states, counties, and towns.

Who would [do it] in their pants if hispanics started voting republican?

But they won't, because the GOP is racist as fuck and has policies that hurt and offend hispanics.

Feliz Navidad ! Santa marches on in the democrat [mechine].

Your use of brackets makes you seem like a crazy person.

What an incoherent mess. The disordered mind of the wingnut.

If you browse over to his so-called blog (it's his login name), which has a couple of posts per month at its most active - there are some 4+ month-long gaps - you'd notice that he's been rambling like this for years.

An example from 2007:

Global Warming

The Earth is now tilted 15 degrees away from the sun. The polar ice cap has now spread past Cincinnati, Ohio. IT"S WINTER. lol. >>>> The # ONE event on THIS earth that controls the weather is the fact that the earth tilts away from the sun in winter. [ meteorology 101, chapter 3.] lol. >>>> REMEMBER; the British made a statement in Parliament stating MANY factual errors in Al Gores movie. MAN DO I LOVE THAT !!!! So ; lets study the environment scientifically not with liberal politics. lol. [is that funny]? >>>> Whoever thought the Democrats would try to tax the air [LMAO]. They ARE doing it and its not funny. Don't let them control your mind it is what makes you free !!

A bashful, studious girl, Noemi walked 10 minutes across dirt roads that cut through corn and potato fields, reaching the highway to Quito. She carried a small suitcase. Russ Campbell’s Blog: Bill C-23, Fair Elections Act Seems Now on Solid Ground
Now that a Senate committee has recommended nine changes to Bill C-23, Fair Elections Act, the legislation seems pretty solid. And, since Pierre Poilievre has, apparently, indicated privately that he's open to changes, an amended version of the bill will likely become law by this summer. We would probably have gotten to this point earlier had not the minister responsible for the bill ...

Why the Temperature of the Yellow Sea Is a Big Deal, and Other Questions About the South Korean Ferry Disaster
The boat ran into trouble several dozen miles from Jindo, an island that sticks out of South Korea's southwestern corner like a little toe. Jindo is surrounded by a group of even smaller islands that are slightly farther afield from the mainland. The ferry was curving around those small islands at the time it issued a distress call. What caused the disaster? We ...

Calgary stabbings: How knife crime in Canada can cause ‘moral panic’
What Calgary police chief Rick Hanson called the "worst mass murder" in the city's history didn't end at the barrel of a gun. New York Electoral College: State Joins National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
Ben Mathis-Lilley, Slate: New York Electoral College: State Joins National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
