Oh for fuck's sake.

This is 2012, and women are dying in first world nations because of a mystical belief that something without a functioning brain is fully human.

Poor woman. Poor husband.

This is terrible. Heart goes out to her husband and their family.

I don't understand the reasoning—is it better for two to die than one? It would have been tragic for the parents to lose the baby, and now the tragedy has been doubled with the death of the mother. A completely unnecessary death.

This more than anything else proves why we should not allow wingnuts to own the conversation by agreeing to "exceptions" for rape/incest/life or whatever.

No one should have to waste precious life-threatening time in proving "exceptions" to a committee of politicians.

This is a medical procedure, period, no one should have to seek an "exception" to have any procedure performed as necessary.

This is what Republican's envision for America.

If this doesn't scare those women who voted for Romney and the other Republican's, I don't know what would. Get pregnant and have a problem? Just die. Preferably quickly and quietly so others don't learn about it.

Women are not non-sentient beings.

Reading this saddened me beyond words.

Way to go, dumbshit religious motherfuckers.

The reasoning is that God is the ultimate decision maker. If both live, if one loves, if both die it doesn't matter. What does matter is non-interference by us because we don't get to choose who lives and who dies.

(Note: These aren't my own viewpoints, I was simply answering the question)

Americas' future if left up to the zealous fanatics of the GOP/ Tea Party. "God works in mysterious ways. Us? We just pontificate and pick our favorite parts out, tear out a page, wrap it around a stone, and beat people to death with it." At least they didn't say they were a "Civilized Country." BTW I'm Irish lineage and my mother ran as fast as she could from "The Church" as soon as she could. In the 50's.

Then doctors and medicine are the tools of Satan and should be banned.

I know these aren't your views, but they are totally insane. Why put out fires? Why rescue people from accidents? Hell, why eat? If god wants you to live he'll figure out a way to make that happen without food.

Since it's all up to some human invented god to decide, why risk pissing him off by crossing him?

I figured as much, but the reasoning isn't carried through to other aspects of life. For example the Pope: Why treat him if he gets sick or, like John Paul II, gets shot? Why should the Popemobile be equipped with bulletproof glass? He's the Pope, if anyone shouldn't be worried about being called to meet his creator it's him, right? For that matter, why have doctors, hospitals, first responders, or even any form of government if God's going to take care of everything?

We see the same thinking among the religious right here WRT attitudes towards birth control, abortion & rape/incest, the environment & climate change, etc.—i.e. God gave it to us for us to use, so we can use & abuse it as we see fit without regard for consequences since God will take care of everything. The utter childishness and irresponsibility at the root of that type of thinking is mind boggling.

Exactly. The exceptions are politically useful when a fool like Akin blunders into wildly unpopular positions. However, their effect in practice is often as in this case. In general, a ban with a "mother's life" exception necessarily leads to onerous (and appalling) government intervention in private medical affairs (since women and their doctors can't be trusted according to Wingnut Truth).

"If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament" may be an old slogan, but I believe it truly captures the essence of the issue. The kind of personal freedom and autonomy we take for granted in the civilized world is simply not consistent with any legal restrictions on abortion.
