I'm not sure Obamacare would have helped. A person with any sort of mental illness, indeed any illness at all, has to admit they need help before help can be given to them.

I know. I suffer from depression and I wouldn't admit it for years. I almost took the same path as this poor soul.

But as long as many people, perhaps a majority, believe that 'mental illness' is 'mental weakness' too many people will suffer and die unnecessarily.

"Such a tragedy: Obamacare would have paid for his depression meds and therapy."

I assume you meant that as a parody of left-wing thinking. A bit like this...

“If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age.”
-- Charles Pierce in a January 5, 2003 Boston Globe Magazine article.

Such a tragedy: Obamacare would have paid for his depression meds and therapy.

Since the poor man apparently died from an overdose of his prescription meds, that's not exactly a very helpful observation, is it ?

Obviously this person suffered from clinical depression, which was undoubtedly made worse by listening to Fox news and wingnut social media.

"Undoubtedly" ?
Did you even read the article ?

Cossey told police Hamilton “has been very stressed about his business,”

What the hell is wrong with you lefties ?

We have several conservatives on this site who make very well thought out posts and responses. Some of them even make very valid arguments against a democratic position. There are even those on here who make very passionate arguments in support of an American conservative viewpoint that I absolutely do not agree with but they are always gentlemen or Ladies about it.
This is either not your intention or you don't know how. I haven't figured out which yet.

Medicated for anxiety and schizophrenia.

Tough place to be, as Romantic Heretic notes.

There isn't much in the way of politics here- only tragedy.

All too often we talk about mental illness as if it were distant and far off.

It isn't. Lives of both the afflicted and those near him or her are impacted forever. There is a lot more suffering and pain than meets the eye.

Hopefully, the lessons we learn will be positive.

You don't have too many clubs in your bag do you? I see you putting...err using the "idiot leftie" in a constant spam. Is that your explanation and argument to everything?

Seems that you aren't an "idiot righty".. you're just an idiot.

The man was probably concerned about paying the new 10% excise tax on tanning and still making a profit. If he is like most tanning businesses receipts are already down due to the economy while utility costs are up.

Tanning salons burned by health care bill

The Obama administration is turning up the heat on tanning salons across the country with the passage of its new health care bill.

To help fund the $940 billion health care overhaul, a 10% tax on individuals receiving indoor tanning services was tacked on, and the initiative is expected to generate $2.7 billion over ten years. As a result, many salon goers and owners are outraged by the so-called "tanning tax" and think they're being unfairly targeted by the bill.

I realize that this is meant to be a sin tax on unhealthy behavior just like the high Federal tax on cigarettes is but for the business owner it is a little different. There are very few businesses that rely solely on cigarette sales for their income and addicted smokers seem willing to pay the high taxes anyway. A tanning salon on the other hand represents a large investment of capital in equipment and space acquisition and renovation and generally only provides a single service.

Tanning is a luxury that many can do without and have been during the economic downturn, the significant increase in the price of this service was sure to drive even more customers away. The major selling points of indoor tanning has been cheap convenience, quickness, and for many the supposedly reduced risk of skin cancer. Recent studies have cast doubt on the claims of skin cancer reduction over natural sunlight for frequent tanners and have had an impact on customer traffic as well.

I would say that the man was justified in being concerned about his business, not to the extant that makes sense of his tragic reaction, but any business owner in his position would be worried.

Oh look, the barfing bigot once again reveals his fascination with that word. Isn't it amusing how he also likes to use it as a vile homophobic slur, and against soldiers no less?

I'd like to see how well this cowardly, prejudiced piece of filth would do if he got his leg blown off.

Already illegal in California for kids under 18.

In fact we have lots of public service announcements against tanning and how it can kill you via skin cancer. This report says there are 170,000 cases of skin cancer caused by specifically indoor tanning.. annually.

We all have to make adjustments in our life. We all have fears to deal with every single day. I'm fairly sure fear was a big part of his action but I don't think you can call it a rational fear.

Study: Reading Fiction Makes People Comfortable With Ambiguity
Are you uncomfortable with ambiguity? It's a common condition, but a highly problematic one. The compulsion to quell that unease can inspire snap judgments, rigid thinking, and bad decision-making.
