US backs Israel; UN calls for de-escalation Egypt: Israeli envoy called back to Israel
Here is where American pressure can be brought to bear against Egypt’s Morsi to support Israel. Clearly, what Israel did was limited and targeted strikes on a terrorist leader. The thing I am worried about is the GOP distracting on Benghazi looking for a political weapon against Obama when we have serious issues to contend with.
Look, I don’t like that the US was ‘blindsided’ on Benghazi to begin with and I kind of think the State Dept was naive to think the situation on Libya was settled enough that the diplomatic mission did not need a beefier force on the ground (probably because they backed the rebels so were favorably disposed to them?) but what happened in Libya was more of a hit and run attack. It was not a game changer for Libya. Despite pockets of instability, overall, Libyans welcome the American and Western efforts to help their nation transition to democracy and reject fanaticism.
On foreign policy, the GOP needs to play a positive non partisan role with the president so we as a nation, can speak with one voice on foreign affairs in areas where we have national interests.
