And I hear I was expecting a Flava Flav joke.

That sort of stunt isn't so funny. This "artist" has made himself as perfect a fit for shoebomber as he can without actually wearing a bomb. His purpose? To make necessary and prudent precautions seem ridiculous.

He thinks it's a joke. But shoe bombs are not a joke.

Well, I guess this demonstrates that not only Muslims are being targeted for wearing funny shoes, which is quite positive, really.

@ Lost lake hiker.
I agree with you!
Twenty years ago a very diligent El Al inspector prevented the loss of an El Al
passenger jet and the loss of more than 300 victims of a terror bombing.

Yes this event was a joke; but the suspicion of the security officers should not be questioned.

Maybe Fox kinda skipped over some details... The following gives me the impression the man knew exactly what he was doing.
[Link: www.contracostatimes.com...]
Geoffrey McGann, 49, was caught with the device and even stranger items in his luggage Thursday evening, TSA agents said.

The "elaborate watch" was buried beneath McGann's coat in a luggage inspection area, and it had been attached to wires, a toggle switch, fuses and a circuit board, TSA agents said.

In addition, McGann's boots were two sizes too big and were stuffed with layers of homemade insoles, which allowed for large cavities where someone would be able to hide items, Alameda County sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson told the San Jose Mercury-News.

McGann was also wearing a military-style shirt with a built-in tourniquet in the sleeves, often used by soldiers to stop bleeding if they suffer an arm injury, the sergeant said.

Uh, yeah, that's gonna raise some questions.

True, that's legal. But if you put it together with the rest of the evidence it becomes very suspicious, as having tourniquets on both arms ready to be tied is a tactic used some Islamists, notably by Chechen snipers in Fallujah in 2004.

My own read of this situation: Mr. McGann was either looking to mock the TSA when (he figured) they let him through with materials usable for a bomb, or was just jonesin' for a Martyr Cookie by being arrested for a "piece of art" and then screaming "HELP, HELP, I'M BEING REPRESSED!".

re: #10 Dark_Falcon

and the tourniquets on both arms will help someone be a terrorist on an airplane, how?

Douglas Rushkoff on Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now
The always-on, simultaneous society in which we have found ourselves has altered our relationship to culture, media, news, politics, economics, and power. We are living in a digital temporal landscape, but instead of exploiting its asynchronous biases, we are misguidedly attempting to extend the time-is-money agenda of the Industrial Age into the current era. The result is a disorienting and dehumanizing mess, where the ...

The GOP’s Steve King Problem
Earlier this year, the Republican National Committee released a 100-page report detailing how the GOP needed to retrofit its agenda and soften its tone. But if Republican officials had wanted to save time, they could have issued a shorthand summary that read: Be less like Steve King. The Iowa congressman's outspoken conservatism embodies the kind of politics that, in the RNC's own words, alienates ...

Reuters: But even the press in aggregate is not a friend to whistle-blowers, as its recent treatment of Snowden attests, what with the deep dives into his teen years (including photos), his education and employment history, his reputation as a loner and a “brainiac,” his pants-down hijinks, his online scribblings, his dancer girlfriend, his predilection for (in his own words) “post-coital Krispy Kremes.” Squeezing ...
