Quite an impressive milestone.

re: #1 Bob Dillon

I'd be more impressed if there were more than one plane involved.

A bit too contrived, I'd say.

re: #2 researchok

No, they have to start somewhere. This is a proof of concept. I personally didn't think they even had a plane ready to try this, but clearly they do. Now they can go back, check that everything worked as intended, and fix anything that didn't work quite right.

In the end they need 2 more to have a single carrier deployed at all times, but they are now on their way (3 is the magic number, 1 in port for refit, one out for training/reserve, one deployed).

But then, you know the thing is going to be shadowed at all times by an American sub that is probably so quiet they won't even be sure it is there.

Why Carriers Are So Damn Expensive

November 22, 2012: American nuclear aircraft carriers are expensive to operate. It’s not just the food and other supplies for the 5,600 people on board, or all the spare parts and fuel for the aircraft. A major expense is the periodic upgrades and refurbishments. For example, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) will complete its mid-life refurbishment and refueling early next year. This RCOH (Refueling and Complex Overhaul) took over three years and cost $3.2 billion.

Video:

China has successfully landed a fighter jet on its first aircraft carrier, which entered service two months ago, the country's official news agency confirmed.

Xinhua News Agency said the landing exercise on the Liaoning carrier marked the debut of the J-15 fighter jet, a fighter-bomber developed by China from Russia's Sukhoi Su-33.

Al Jazeera's Khadija Magardie explains what makes the event a significant milestone for China.

We still need those carriers. All of them. We need to make sure we are powerful enough to fend them off for the sake of the region. They are malignant power. In addition, we need to start raising taxes to pay off the debts we owe to them, and ban China from buying our debt.

I despise the PRC. The treatment of the Uighurs and the Tibetans initiated those feelings. I would like for the PRC to collapse. I wish there was a way to help push it towards that.

I prefer India as a balancing power to the PRC.

re: #6 ProGunLiberal

Absolutely. Talk of eliminating yet another carrier strike group is disturbing.

I was eight when China invaded Tibet. It was quite stunning to me even then and still carry hard feelings towards the PRC as well.

India may have delays but they are working on their first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier. Quite a race:

The aircraft carrier is critical to India's ambition to emerge as a dominant player in the Indian Ocean region. Although India needs at least two, if not three, aircraft carriers, however, to ensure that it has at least one carrier available at all times, at present it is still pushing the 50 year old British made war horse INS Viraat. The warship has served the Navy for 25 years and should have been decommissioned in 2002. Naval experts say rarely do any Navy use ships which are 50 years old.

Knights Templar Drug Cartel Burns Michoacan, Western State in Mexico
LA RUANA, Mexico -- The farm state of Michoacan is burning. A drug cartel that takes its name from an ancient monastic order has set fire to lumber yards, packing plants and passenger buses in a medieval-like reign of terror. The Knights Templar cartel is extorting protection payments from cattlemen, lime growers and businesses such as butchers, prompting some communities to fight back, ...

New Method for Producing Clean Hydrogen
Duke University engineers have developed a novel method for producing clean hydrogen, which could prove essential to weaning society off of fossil fuels and their environmental implications. While hydrogen is ubiquitous in the environment, producing and collecting molecular hydrogen for transportation and industrial uses is expensive and complicated. Just as importantly, a byproduct of most current methods of producing hydrogen is carbon monoxide, ...

Pope Francis Says Atheists Who Do Good Are Redeemed, Not Just Catholics
Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists. During his homily at Wednesday Mass in Rome, Francis emphasized the importance of "doing good" as a principle that unites all humanity, and a "culture of encounter" to support peace. Using scripture from the Gospel of Mark, Pope Francis explained how upset Jesus' ...

WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Pfeiffer gives the impression that GOP operatives deliberately tried to "smear the president" with false, doctored e-mails. We know how to reduce the incidence of common medical conditions but …
Obesity is on the rise-- as is the incidence of Heart Disease, Diabetes, Stroke and various forms of Cancer. And, shockingly, diseases that had in the past begun in old age are now appearing at much earlier ages. A groundbreaking scientific study showed how easily (and inexpensively) the rate of occurrence of these and other serious illness could be greatly reduced-- but this information ...
