But above all, the bishops need to learn what I’ll call the St. Francis de Sales lesson. A church looking to halt defections among so many younger Catholics should understand that casting itself as a militantly right-wing political organization — which, face it, is what some of the bishops are doing — clouds its Christian message. Worse, the church seems to be going out of its way to hide its real treasure: the extraordinary examples of generosity and social reconstruction visible every day in parishes such as St. Francis and in the homeless shelters, schools, hospices and countless other Catholic entities all over the nation.

Politics divides Catholics. The works of mercy bring us together and also show the world what the power of faith can achieve.

Says it all.

How much does birth control divide Catholics?

Not much, except for in the Church hierarchy, regardless of the official Church position 82% of all Catholics said that birth control was morally acceptable in a recent gallup poll. Further, in a long running government survey fully 98% of Catholic women who had had sex within the last three months admitted to having used birth control at some point. So it isn't all that divisive really, mainly because no one is listening to them on this point anyway.

The only way this actually divides Catholics is if the Bishops continue to ignore reality by campaigning against allowing their people and employees access to insurance plans that cover contraception. They really should just let this one go, they don't even have to change policy, just treat it kinda like DADT. ;)

ONE BIG issue is that women are not in the hierarchy. No nuns allowed.

If the powers that be in the church were evenly divided between men and women, the rules about contraception would be easier to accept. The fact that all the rules about women are dictated by men --none of whom will ever have wives or families of their own -- is A HUGE ISSUE.

With me anyway, I get this feeling in my gut and just want to break things.

If the theology determines that there is a soul waiting for every fetus, that is a sweet idea. But that this theology that restricts women in the world has been determined by men and only men makes it suspect.

That all the teachings and catechisms have been written by MEN; the bible itself and all it's interpretations have been been written by MEN; make them suspect.
