The GOP built it. Now they get to ride it. Right into the ground.

Does Fox really care about any of that? Or do they just care about making money? I'm not sure they care if they hurt the Republicans or not, so long as they are pulling in the viewership. I suspect they care about shaping the story to sell more viewership, but I don't think they care what happens in Washington.

I was travelling (I don't have cable at home) when the Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami hit, and the coverage was so completely out there and sensational it was mind blowing. CNN and MSNBC were bad too, but Fox was orders of magnitude worse. Hours after all three had erroneously reported radiation levels, Fox was still running with it. CNN and MSNBC had long corrected themselves.

That is a great point and I don't know either if FOX is part of the GOP noise machine or is a parasite feeding off the GOP base (because the GOP base is easily manipulated and the guy who runs FOX, Ailes, figured that out about them from running Rush Limbough's show)?

It's all part of what's been called an echo chamber, and the GOP's problem is that it doesn't have a leader who will face a conservative media figure and win.

Ailes's knowledge of the GOP base goes back way farther than Limbaugh's show -- he was Nixon's media strategist. Taught Lee Atwater everything he knew.

I think FOX helps the GOP the same way Limbaugh helps the GOP: if you do what Fox wants, then they'll promote you. If you disagree with them, they will punish you- or try to punish you, anyway.

But that doesn't exactly translate into electoral victory. The things they say and the way they stump for a candidate can be detrimental to the candidate. This is what the article is trying to get at I think. Promoting "Legitimate Rape" is not going to help him/her get elected.

Just as bad, keeping the base fired up and getting them to remind the elected official he's not allowed to compromise is the same as not letting him do his job. You can't get anything in Politics without give and take. If you aren't allowed to give, nobody is going to let you take. Result: Republicans don't get anything they want. (and neither do Democrats).

It's the whole rightwing pundit industry including Fox News really.
That type of parasite that alters the behaviour of its host in a way that is, ahem, contrary to it's own self-interest, to put it mildly:

Brainwashed by a parasite

The spores of the fungus attach themselves to the external surface of the ant, where they germinate. They then enter the ant’s body through the tracheae (the tubes through which insects breathe), via holes in the exoskeleton called spiracles. Fine fungal filaments called mycelia then start to grow inside the ant’s body cavity, absorbing the host’s soft tissues but avoiding its vital organs.

When the fungus is ready to sporulate, the mycelia grow into the ant’s brain. The fungus then produces chemicals which act on the host’s brain and alter its perception of pheromones. This causes the ant to climb a plant and, upon reaching the top, to clamp its mandibles around a leaf or leaf stem, thus securing it firmly to what will be its final resting place.

The fungus then devours the ant’s brain, killing the host. The fruiting bodies of the fungus sprout from the ant’s head, through gaps in the joints of the exoskeleton. Once mature, the fruiting bodies burst, releasing clusters of capsules into the air. These in turn explode on their descent, spreading airborne spores over the surrounding area. These spores then infect other ants, completing the life cycle of the fungus. Depending on the type of fungus and the number of infecting spores, death of an infected insect takes between 4-10 days.
