I agree.

What is this shit? Who in their right mind even thinks of "Butthurt" having anything to do with sodomy?

Sorry but I think that this writers arguments are flatly ridiculous.

To me being butthurt is nothing more than being irrationally angry and/or resentful over being on the losing side of an argument, election, or what have you. It has absolutely nothing to do with actual rectal pain or anal rape either male or female, and I really don't care what some demented bastard wrote as a definition at the Urban Dictionary.

You know what offends me? Caring more about a word than context. Acting as if I am celebrating rape by saying "butthurt" or that I hate and ridicule some people with disabilities because I called my buddy a retard for leaving his coffee on the roof of his car.

Why don't you work on fighting sexual assault in prison which might actually help something rather than trying to force the entire world to phrase ideas in a way which won't knock that giant chip off your shoulder.

Fuck the language police.

4 Political Atheist  Wed, Dec 5, 2012 2:00:35pm

I never liked the phrase. It just never seemed yet another lame insult with an internet origin. By the time insults like this start getting thrown around, time to just yawn & move on.

I always thought it meant getting spanked.

Well put.

People get butthurt when cherished but ill-founded beliefs they don't know how to live without collide with reality. The term perfectly describes what the GOP and their supporters have been experiencing since nov 6th, for instance.

The argument that the term "butthurt" is intrinsically offensive and even homophobic was actually stage one of LGF's thankfully long gone wingnuts reaction to it being used on them. When that silly argument failed they moved on to stage two which was "no - you're butthurt!"

It's the first thing I thought of when I first saw the word and it's the same thing that crosses my mind every single time I see it.

Since the topic is words/phrases that are insulting or vile, I don't like "magic underwear" either. ;-)

8 goddamnedfrank  Wed, Dec 5, 2012 3:43:34pm

I always equated butthurt to the feeling you get during/after taking one of those thankfully rare but really huge, soul shattering shits. I'm talking about the kind of crap where you have to pause a third of the way though, take several deep breaths, and cogitate on your game plan and past dietary decisions.

And I have an uncle who got AIDS in prison, so it's not like I react well to insinuations of forced sodomy.

Me too. I always thought of stinging butt cheeks. I never thought of sodomy.

But just to play devils advocate, if butthurt is a reference to anal rape, would telling someone "fuck you" be a reference to rape as well? Or "fuck me" or "I' screwed". Aren't all of those a reference to an unpleasant sexual experience? Why would a term implying gay male sex be worse?

I think of "butthurt" in much the same way as "a pain in the arse", inasmuch as I think of it at all, and certainly not as a reference to anal rape.

But clearly others do, so context matters, your mileage may vary, autre pays autre moeurs, chacun a son gout, de gustibus non est disputandum, and do not shake before opening.

By the way, in Antipodean English, "bugger" is an extremely mild1 expletive and in general usage has absolutely no sexual connotations whatsoever.

1 How mild? This mild.

Words are powerful. They shape our relations to each other. And it's not up to us as individuals to decide what they mean or whether the use of those words perpetuate unjust relationships within society.

I think that we should all agree that it's not OK to call people "fag" and "retard" just because we tell ourselves that we do not mean anything bad by those words.

I don't know enough about "butthurt" to say if it is a word those those ones.

Political discourse in America has reached levels of douchebaggery previously only theorized about but never observed, like conversational dark matter.
