If you want to fire an M-16 then you should join your local "well regulated militia" also known as your state's National Guard.

The problem with the old "Assault Weapons Ban" was that they spent too much time worried about what a gun looked like and whether or not it had a flash suppressor or bayonet lug. Any attempt to revive the ban needs to include true objective standards of some kind. We need to avoid a repeat of the previous version that undermined itself and was laughed at by those who knew about guns because of its ridiculously subjective standards.

You cannot ban the AK-47 and not ban the SKS, not again, Congress needs to come up with a law that works. Not one meant just to appease people and impress the more gullible amongst the electorate but that actually does nothing.

My sentiments exactly. The original AWB was pitiful and weak since most of the banned items dealt with cosmetics (excluding the high-capacity mag provision).

I discount what you said about "the old "Assault Weapons Ban" was that they spent too much time worried about what a gun looked like". That had to do with provisions in the law that outlawed adjustable stocks, etc. Yes that affects the look but that had zero to do with concern about a menacing appearance. That was just NRA back talk propaganda to make the law look "silly", But I agree that law had a lot of loopholes that were they because of fear of the NRA.
