I agree that revisiting an assault weapon ban is likely a trap the pro gun-control side should not get involved in, but I'll believe no opposition from NRA, GOA, etc., to mandatory gun safes when I see it.

I'm not so sure those groups would support it. I think the NSSF would, but the NRA might well run into internal opposition owing to members opposed to an Obama initiative due to ODS. I hope not, though.

In the spirit of satirical fun let me show you why we have proof they support good gun storage. At some risk of getting in trouble-

I'm not going to link the rest. But now you can see where the NRA supports safes-For sale and as a basic safety rule in the training.

I think that "mandatory" will be a big sticking point. I'm sure there are a great many safety measures the NRA recommends that they would bitterly oppose making mandatory.

Not this week. Take advantage.

I don't think any gun ban will pass the house (assuming it survives opposition in the Senate). I doubt that Boehner would even bring the bill up for a vote.

Mandatory trigger locks or safes? That should be doable.

not sure this would work. here is the problem with the 'gun safe' contention:
guns are mostly kept for safety - not hunting as is popularly suggested. any gun in a safe or with a lock on the trigger mitigates any ability for that gun to be used in a home invasion, attack, robbery, mugging, or other personal attack.

if you render guns unusable for personal safety, then there will be 300 million guns in peoples hands for no reason, and very few actually used for hunting.

this may work in the future when they finally manage to institute fingerprint readers on guns, but unless i am mistaken - that is not going to fix the problem for the 300 million guns already in circulation.
