I saw Pompeii many years ago when one could wander around as one wished. That was a village then...

I think mine was about the same year, give one or two. Memory is not what it was, but I didn't do the hike, so you have that on me.

Just imagine the loss of life and property damage it will do when it next erupts, look at all the development around it now. I certainly hope it gives people plenty of warning to get away before it blows its top so we don't see another Pompeii. :(

Oh yeah, and good luck on them getting any seismologists to predict whether or not it will have a major eruption if it starts acting up. Not after the Italians sentenced those six scientists and the one bureaucrat to prison for failing to predict that last earthquake (Link). If I were a scientist and they asked me anything I would simply give them a Gallic shrug while keeping my mouth firmly shut.

Well, we sure did not hike all the way! [Link: www.portanapoli.com...]

Transportation from the U.S. was provided by Mine Division 43, part of an Amphibious Assult Group out of Little Creek, VA. Took us ~30 days to cross the Atlantic.

re: #7 Bob Dillon

So I'm guessing you are 2 or 3 years older than me at 67.
