Thank you for this piece, but it really should be on the front page, since it illustrates a true loon’s DERPs. But again, thank you for it.

Her comparisons are over the top, but it remains true that in the wake of 9/11, the US president has assumed the power to kill anyone anywhere in the world for allegedly being a terrorist, with effectively no oversight from any other branch of government.

Obama (and GW Bush before him) have not pushed the war on terror in the direction of straight-up fascism. However, some of the necessary tools for this transition are in place, and I am not happy with the thought that preventing a slide into US fascism depends significantly on the good will of Obama and his successors.

The response to yet another of her silly pieces shows yet again the stark difference between the right and left constituencies.
Naomi Wolf’s market is rather small, if extremely loyal. Her heart may be in the right place ideologically, her motivations may even be relatively pure, and indeed, as radar says above, n a general sense she’s probably correct much of the time. But that only damages the causes for which she is in favor of - ir it would, if she was taken seriously any more.
As has been said over and over again the last few years, her arguments are devoid of facts, or she is extremely selective of convenient facts to make a point, she joins dots in very bizarre ways - and on and on - I won’t repeat what has been compiled and said better elsewhere.
And for her righteous dishonesty, she is not rewarded with praise, nor given a regular position on a cable show. She’s not seen as a ‘thought leader’, or a champion of any libertarian-liberal or any other movement - though she clearly wants to be. No, she is seen pretty much for who she is - a charlatan who wants the respect of the public - and she fails miserably in her quest.
Yet if she was coming from the right, she would be praised - as we see from a list so massive and so well known, I don’t need to bother listing names. We all know who they are, and there are probably many more newly wealthy ‘expose’ peddlers we’ve never heard of - who’ve made millions ‘writing’ books telling The People what they want to hear.

This kind of dishonest but politically, ideologically ‘correct’ writing and noise-making is really only respected and lucrative on the right. One of the numerous aspects I love about the politics I associate with. Respecting that reality is reality, funnily enough - and the only way to win an ideological and/or policy debate with any legitimacy, and go forward as a society, is with honest debate and studying actual reality - not a warped one twisted by ideology. As the right is seeing, even if the electorate is as uninformed as it is, they are still beginning to pay for their bizarre, overtly dishonest nonsense. When they begin to treat Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh with the same level that we treat Naomi Wolf, then the country will be headed in a great direction. Until then, not the president(or “Mr Obama” as per the Washington Post, ffs), not Mao, Stalin or Hitler(our apparent heroes!?) - will be able to steer the nation in a positive direction.

Well, she’d fit right in at #TGDN. Nobody would even realize that she is a moonbat!

I’ve read her Disaster Capitalism, and that did not seem to have the kinds of factual issues reported on above. It is unfortunate that she is losing (or has lost) her credibility by overstating the case.

Since nuance doen’t sell books, or penetrate into public policy discussions, perhaps this was inevitable.

Thanks for the correction. I was operating from my addled memory, and am happy to realize that Wolf’s nonsense has nothing to do with Klein’s work.

Don’t feel too bad, I’ve gotten their names confused before too.

If I were Naomi Klein, I would get so freaking sick of that I’d resort to referring to myself as N. Klein instead o_O

Especially since Disaster Capitalism is basically making the case that hard-right economic policies and fascism often go hand-in-hand (e.g., Chile), using actual facts and research as opposed to lurid fantasies.

I humbly eat crow after posting a recent article by her about supposed FBI and police collusion in the suppression of OWS. I simply should have known better.

re: #11 EPR-radar

So Chile is fascist?

Let’s look at some indices of freedom.

Reporters Without Borders Linkrates Chile 82nd among nations (first is best) on freedom of the press. The US rates 47th, Israel 92nd, Brazil 99th, Venezuela 119th, and Mexico 149th. All those other countries must be either more fascist or more Communist, if Chile is fascist.

Freedom House (linked to by Huffpost) rates Chile as “Free”. Link

How about economic freedom? Chile ranks 7th Link(Heritage Foundation and the WSJ). (USA, 10th).

How fare the poor? 0.5 percent of children under the age of 5 underweight. (USA, 1.3 percent.)

Chile doesn’t have an military entanglements. By what stretch of the imagination can Chile be deemed fascist? Indices right and left (any way you want to take that) say different.

Including the Heritage Foundation’s rating as though they’re anything other than a right-wing propaganda mill is hilarious and sad but mainly sad.

And I figured he was talking about Pinochet, who’s administration was quite arguably fascist and who implemented a ton of hard-right economic policies.

Correct. I meant Chile under Pinochet. Which, not so incidentally, implemented certain pension “reforms” that the US right has floated for use here…
