This would have been a tragedy on the level of the burning of the Library of Alexandria.

The PBS sale was fortunate for Python in more ways than one: when the offer came in, the BBC was on the point of wiping the tapes for reuse.

Most of the early Tonight Shows with Johnny Carson had a similar fate, IIRC. The kinescopes were trashed — to make room for something else, I suppose.

A lot of the early Doctor Who suffered that fate.
