Omitting Chicago surely helps the case. Complete stats or not, Chicago has more murders per year than NYC or LA, both larger than it. The gap would be wider today with Chicago in it than it is without.

And why is Chicago omitted? They say they lack complete statistics. But here is a list from Wikipedia, including every year since 1990, and a couple from earlier.

The case made in the article is also unnecessarily blinkered. Are there no big cities in Europe or Asia to look at? Surely they didn’t take the lead out of gasoline at the same time as the US. If lead is the reason, we should expect to see the same trends in, say, Tokyo, just with a different inflection point.

The article is good debate tactics and good polemics but it’s not good statistics.

I dont buy it , the Romans drank from cups made of lead and what leeched and was actually ingested was far greater than what would be inhaled from car traffic . If that were the case car mechanics , gas station attendants and toll booth workers should display a higher rate of violence . Sounds good though . I think it more a question of poor nutrition , bad nuturing, fatherless children , dysfunctional families , alcoholic parent[s] .

My thought is what Heinlein said.

You can drive any animal crazy by sticking too many of them in the same cage. Human beings appear to be the only ones who do this voluntarily.

Yes, I wasn’t too sure about the theory. Lead may be a contributor for “some” individuals who have some susceptibility, but I have a hard time believing in any “silver bullet” answer to any such complex issue.

Oklahoma School District OKs ‘Bible Curriculum’ Created by Hobby Lobby President
Green hopes the program -- which will be overseen by Jerry Pattengale, head of the Green Scholars Initiative -- will be placed in "hundreds" of high schools by 2016, and "thousands" by 2017. It is a four-year elective course in which students will study the narrative, history, and impact of the Bible on Western Civilization. Because the book is being taught within an ...

When Evangelicals Were Pro-Choice - GOPlifer
Jamelle Bouie had a great piece at Slate last week explaining the long strange journey of Protestant Evangelicals from pressing for the expansion of abortion rights to vehement opposition to nearly every aspect of women's reproductive choices. Bouie correctly identifies the trend, but he misses an important pivot point that calls the rest of his analysis into question. Bouie correctly points out that ...

Russ Campbell’s Blog: Will Trudeau’s Party Pay for His Ill-Chosen Words?
Justin Trudeau has talked himself into a defamation lawsuit that is likely to leave his party quite a bit lighter in the wallet. The shoot-from-the-lip Liberal leader and his Ontario campaign co-chair David MacNaughton are named in a $1.5-million libel suit filed on behalf of Christine Innes, a candidate who was barred from running for the Liberal party. The Insane History of Rockets at Jet Propulsion Laboratories
The Rocket Boys In the late 1930s, a group of Caltech graduate students were booted off campus after blowing up (part of!) their building during a rocket test gone awry. Unwilling to give up on the joy of semi-controlled explosions, the students and a few of their friends headed into the San Gabriel Mountains. They picked a deserted gully -- Arroyo Seco -- ...

Women on Front of Bundy Standoff - the Latest From the Front
But the scene above took place four years before Monica, in 1994, long before Clinton handed his enemies a scandal on a platter that seemingly made such references acceptable. It was not at a Republican caucus or Christian Coalition meeting, but at a gathering of right-wing "Patriots" who had come to hear about forming militias and common-law courts and defending their gun rights ...

North Carolina Appeals Coal Ash Ruling
There's a lot of very weird stuff going on in the newly insane state of North Carolina. The state has a problem with coal ash, and with its groundwater, and with the reluctance of Duke Energy to clean up, among other things, the 39,000 fking pounds of the gunk that it spilled into the Dan River in February. The state's Environmental Management Commission ...
