This is an aspect of the Gun fashion that I abhor.
The NRA should be labelled the recidivist arseholes.

This isn’t about the NRA; The NRA would agree this man should not be allowed to own a gun. The problem was a screw up at the state level, not a ‘loophole in the law’. Records keeping work that needed to be done to add this man into the NICS as a prohibited person wasn’t done. That’s not a fault of the law, that’s a fault in the implementation of the law.

He could have just bought his weapons at a gun show. No checks there. Or he could have just bought them from a neighbor.

The point is, he could get a hold of all the weapons he could afford to buy, and there’s nothing to stop him, thanks to the efforts of the NRA.

You do realize that the NRA has come out against beefing up implementation of the law, right?

No, it hasn’t, not at the relevant point of this article. This guy didn’t benefit from a loophole (perhaps he could have done so, but the article is about what he actually did), he wasn’t flagged because paperwork didn’t get properly processed. This should be treated as a call for new laws, this is a call for a small number of state bureaucrats and cops to get disciplined or fired for fouling up. Even had someone at a gun show run him through the National Instant Check System, he would not have come back as a prohibited person because the paperwork needed to have listed him as such was not done. No law can work without implementation not done in this case. And the NRA does not oppose the implementation of the long-standing law in question.
