What if the Soviet union required its students to pledge allegiance to the state in order to graduate from school?

You know who ELSE required kids to pledge allegiance to the government?

Or Iran.

I’m a retired U.S. History and civics teacher. IMO, what these legislators need to be focusing on in this bill is having the students learn the duties and responsibilities of citizenship, the accurate history of our nation, what is in the Constitution, how it affects them, and how their knowledge of it can help make our country a better place for all of us. Also, imo, it doesn’t seem to do any good for them to take a pledge to uphold and defend a document that few of them know/understand. This legislation appears to me to be another attempt by some nutso AZ lawmaker to show how much he “loves” the Constitution while he and his party members demonstrate their disdain for anything having to do with the U.S. government, which is still governed by the Constitution, in the “Age of Obama.” This legislation is 100% pure bullsh*t parading as “patriotism.”

Precisely. The whole idea of loyalty oaths for the general population is way too authoritarian.

Its a trick! You graduate by refusing to take the oath, thus demonstrating your awareness that coercing an oath to God is a violation of your constitutional rights./

9 terraincognita  Sat, Jan 26, 2013 8:30:15pm

Your status as an American is determined by how many loyalty oaths one can sign. This smacks of Catch 22’s Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade by which war aviators could only get their food and supplies by signing ever more loyalty oaths. There will always be insane ones among us.

How the IRS’s Nonprofit Division Got So Dysfunctional - ProPublica
The IRS division responsible for flagging Tea Party groups has long been an agency afterthought, beset by mismanagement, financial constraints and an unwillingness to spell out just what it expects from social welfare nonprofits, former officials and experts say. The controversy that erupted in the past week, leading to the ousting of the acting Internal Revenue Service commissioner, an investigation by the FBI, ...

Your Weekly Peggy Noonan Three Martini Column
We are in the midst of the worst Washington scandal since Watergate. The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they're seeing. The Justice Department assault on the Associated Press and the ugly politicization of the Internal Revenue Service have left the administration's credibility deeply, ...

4 Things We Should Remember When Arguing About Politics
Political discourse in America has reached levels of douchebaggery previously only theorized about but never observed, like conversational dark matter. We're in a whole new world of hating people based solely on their opinions on a few key issues, and since this is unexplored territory, our conversations about politics are usually only a couple notches beyond the "hold your breath until the other ...

Seems a good way to solicit ideas for touristing destinations and activities. Will have 4-5 days so some opportunity for visiting multiple sites. And since I do have an interest in history and military history items in that area will be welcome suggestions. (The USS Midway down in San Diego is already on the list.)
