I bet you he is a Republican…..

Baby Boomers may be cracking up. My father likes to repost vague threats and curses to progressives. His retired buddies pass around statements like, “The founders would be shooting by now..” He’s 67, yet I still try to reason with him. But it makes no difference. He is convinced the world is against him and his generation…. Anyone else see this or am I extrapolating too much?

I’m over 60 and just the amount to bullshit I get sent to me from what I considered stable intelligent people never stops amazing me. I call it the “What about ME” syndrome. It’s like they swallowed every cliche and Welfare Cadillac lie ever told them, turned on Fox News and screamed “I KNEW IT!” My sister is fucking hallucinating about what “used to be” America. I have a lawyer friend who s a birther and worse. I know a guy who abandoned his wife and kid, just ran off, and did boatloads of drugs and alcohol and all he knows is how “fucked up” the kids are today. There are a lot of totally detached goofballs and worse my age. I get a lot of ” you know.” You know? You know! When I press the issue and tell them to explain it, they can’t or worse they start spouting Fox and Rush and GOP garbage. No. Your are not mistaken.

The people in my family in that age range are all liberals, so no, no cracking over here.

The cultural anxiety of the American Right has metastasized into as untreatable and inoperable tumor.

The damn truth. I’ll be 64 in June. It seems that not a day goes by that I don’t feel an impulse to grab some other old-timer by the collar and say, “What the fuck is wrong with you? Haven’t you learned anything in all these years? Straighten up and act like a human being! How do you expect young people to be civilized when you curl up into a big shit-ball of crazy?” Sixty seems to be the final boundary where the wheat really separates from the chaff.

The Boomers absolutely reveled in their youth, and the media culture of the time played it up for all it was worth. Many of them were too busy with their youthful narcissism to learn to respect their elders. Now that they are the elders, they don’t know how to respect themselves.

Uhhh. I’m a little old to be a Boomer, and I’m demonstrably the biggest Obama supporter in my zipcode (even though he is a little conservative for me). Don’t delude yourselves that this shit will just die out.

re: Decatur Deb… I don’t meant to lump every “Seasoned citizen” together with the crazies that are surfacing… But you’re right, I am probably putting too much blame on aging conservatives for the current bigotry and threats of violence. There are plenty of 30 somethings that I know that have “Impeach Obama” on their bumpers… It just seems that lately, these threats and attacks are mostly from older individuals… I think of the Georgia geriatric militia from a few months ago, and the demographic of Glenn Beck’s rally audiences… They want their country back, as they constantly remind me on FB.

Just fighting complacency—you’re in a 1000 year war, and every generation has to retake the same ground.

The “what about me” tear jerks also believe with all there heart that Unions are how we got raped by the Republicans, that auto workers make too much money although they never met one or set foot on an assembly line. Everyone else (read black or Latino or illegal or lazy or just not of them) is getting something for nothing, while they are underpaid and pissed on. “Where’s my bailout?” is a popular lament along with “I didn’t get no stimulus money but the Unions did.” Then we have the walking around talking to his shoes while Rush Limbaugh burrows like a beetle into their thick skulls schmuck. Or the ” I don’t have kids why should I pay school tax?” Then the ever popular ” you know when I was young…..” All the while supporting people who would cut their throats and then go have a nice dinner. My sis is remembering a life she never had, wondering where it went. I think half the world is nuts. If not for my wife and children and my few close friends, and this outlet, I might have been grabbing a few old fogies and choking them out. There’ no shortage of young stupid either, but the mass of it is older.
