Somehow I can’t see roads getting paved and kindergartners getting taught just because government got out of the way and let a bunch of hipsters do all that stuff for it.

To me this is like teaching code to the young. It’s the language of the future economy. Did you see what they did for the Muni train system? Smart. I’ll bet hacking the process would result in better roads. of course at the end of the day the pavem,ent has to be laid by people and machines. But urban planning could use a good hack.

There’s a place for hacking. My beef with this kind of article, though, is that it’s held up by smug Silicon Valley types who lucked out in the gold rush as a kind of magic bullet, when in fact it’s going to yield, at best, marginal improvements over the status quo. It also assumes, often wrongly, that people running various government services aren’t aware of potential improvements.

Besides, if you want to get people involved in hacking on data sources, you might also want to reflect on why it’s currently essentially illegal to do so due to the influence of large media corporations on the legislative process.
