I volunteer at an animal shelter, and in my experience pit bulls are the most absurdly affectionate dogs around. They are also clever, energetic, and doggone cute.

Pit bulls have gotten a bad rap for years. The owner is the dogs personality more often than not. Raise a dog to be mean and you will get a mean dog. Remember Petey?

Exactly! Petey was a pitbull!

My cousin has a Pit/Dalmatian mix. Dog is great with her two kids- 10 and 7. I agree. You treat a dog good, he’ll be good. Sure some breeds may be more aggressive than others but ultimately it’s all about how we treat them.

Pretty much the same with kids.

You get what you give.

The saddest and most deeply fucked up things I learned after adopting an American Pit Bull Terrier are:

1. Most people don’t know what a pit bull is. The term is used to generalize several dozen molosser type dogs. Furthermore, people misremember dog attacks stories such that the animal was a “pit bull” even when it wasn’t. Since my dog was incredibly affectionate, many folks informed me she “couldn’t” be a pit bull.

2. To get two dogs to fight to the death, you have to have breeds that are very, very loyal to their human. Part and parcel of dog fights is the animals withdrawing, and having to be urged back into the fight by their trainer.

3. People excuse threatening behavior by small dogs because they infantilize them, but interpret the actions of large dogs as more violent regardless of their behavior. Which is a pretty good measure of how subjective public impressions of “dog breed X is inherently violent” are.

I suggest that it may not be simply a matter of “more aggressive”, but that some breeds may be more territorial; meaning that they are great with their “pack”, but more prone to defend against strangers.

Yeah that’s a good point. We forget how closely these animals are related to wolves after all.

Any and all bad/dangerous canine behavior should fall squarely on the shoulders of the owner. Period.
