1 Glenn Beck's Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut  Thu, Feb 7, 2013 12:24:17pm

She should shut up unless she examines him. He’s completely right on that.

There is currently a debate in medicine in whether weight loss, simply on its own, is actually a good thing. There’s some significant morbidity associated with increased weight loss, even voluntary weight loss—

[Link: care.diabetesjournals.org…]

A controversy still exists regarding the role of intentional weight loss for prognosis in nondiabetic healthy subjects, as well as in patients with type 2 diabetes, when weight loss is often a contradiction to the weight increase followed by use of some anti-diabetic drugs. Without evidence from trials, we will never be able to make justified clinical decisions on how and when weight loss should be recommended to risk patients and which methods should be preferred—lifestyle, drugs, or surgical intervention.

Observational studies only represent one first step and are not fully reliable, since rest confounding may sometimes bias the outcome. For example, the background drug medication given to patients losing weight may either increase or decrease the likelihood of achieving weight loss, but at the same time reduce risk of morbidity and mortality. One well-known example of this is the use of β-receptor blockers for secondary prevention after myocardial infarction (41). Even if a weight increase is likely to occur after the use of these drugs, thus providing harder conditions for any weight loss, the cardiovascular risk is decreased and that is what matters the most.

re: #1 Obdicut

Agreed that a doctor should know better than to pull a diagnosis out of thin air.

However, it is also reasonable for voters to mind the statistics, and pay extra attention to Christie’s running mate.

I really, really, really, really disagree. If you take this sort of attitude, then that penalizes everybody who has any sort of illness or weakness. I don’t think that’s fair, unless whatever it is has a really, really high statistical likelihood of killing or incapacitating them.

Destro, calling Christie out for being anti-science and then downdinging me for posting a scientific journal article is a cool irony move. I hope you had a cat to stroke at the same time, and perhaps a monocle to twirl.

I suspect we agree in principle, and disagree over where the statistical threshold falls. For me, morbid obesity is over that threshold, while simply being overweight is well under this threshold.

Also, in a US presidential election, the influence of a VP selection is usually close to zero. It doesn’t take much to move the needle a little further away from zero.

Christie suffers from asthma attacks on top of hie weight issue. He is not healthy in the least.

I really think it’s highly dangerous ground to start parsing it down to lifestyle stuff. The among a candidate drives around is probably the single biggest predictor of whether they’ll die. Or how many showers they take. We are all but grass, man.

I wonder how different the world we live in would be if these people were not allowed run for president because of their asthma.

U.S. Presidents with asthma

Did you know there are several U.S. Presidents that suffered from asthma? If you are an asthma sufferer, imagine having asthma during a time when natural remedies were used to treat symptoms. Adrenaline, the first modern medication used for asthma, was not prescribed until the 1920’s!

According to the AAFA of Southern California, the following lists the U.S. Presidents and Vice President that suffered from asthma:

Martin Van Buren
8th President of the United States (1782-1862)

Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt
26th President of the United States (1858-1919)

Woodrow Wilson
28th President of the United States (1856-1924)

Calvin Coolidge
30th President of the United States (1872-1933)

John F. Kennedy
35th President of the United States (1917-1963)

Walter Mondale
Former U.S. Vice President (1928- )

I haven’t seen his health records, but I do know a little bit about exercising, and the man does not look healthy. He looks like a quick trip to the mailbox would have him winded, and if he had to run from a bear he’d be bear food. And all that fat surrounding your organs? Making your heart work that hard to cart yourself around? Not a good idea.

Why Hate Groups Continue to Exist in 2013
Fifty years ago, African-Americans were targets of the Ku Klux Klan's violent hate agenda as the Civil Rights movement gained steam in desegregating public institutions across the South. The Birmingham church bombings, which killed four little girls in 1963, was one of the most violent crimes the Ku Klux Klan has been responsible for in attacking Black Americans (on Friday, the president signed ...

Obamacare Will Be a Debacle — for Republicans
Well, the preliminary numbers for CA are in -- and they're looking very good, with costs coming in below expectations. At this point, it looks as if this thing is indeed going to work. And think about the political dynamics. Because the Supreme Court decided to let states opt out of the Medicaid expansion, some states -- notably Texas -- will have a ...

An Interplanetary GPS Using Pulsar Signals
Spacecraft could determine their position anywhere in the solar system to within five kilometres using signals from x-ray pulsars, say astronomers. Navigating in space is a tricky business. The usual method relies on Earth-based tracking stations to work out a spacecraft's distance using radio waves, a process that is accurate to within a metre or so. That's fine for the radial distance, but ...

"Crisis Pregnancy Centers" (CPCs) or Pregnancy Resource Centers advertise on your campus and in your community. They pose as comprehensive women's health clinics and advertise under "abortion" and "family planning" services, but do not offer abortion services, contraception, or referrals. CPCs often provide false information about abortion, birth control, and the effectiveness of condoms for the prevention of STIs and HIV. Ultimately, their ...

4 Reasons ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Is Secretly About Drugs
Nice, right? Anyway, here's my thesis: Raiders of the Lost Ark is not an action-adventure movie about an archaeologist who plays by his own rules and saves the day. Instead, the film is an exploration of Marion Ravenwood's crippling drug addiction. An addiction that was born from her unhealthy relationship and continued association with Indiana Jones. Is it true? Who cares. Can I prove ...

WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Pfeiffer gives the impression that GOP operatives deliberately tried to "smear the president" with false, doctored e-mails. But the reporters involved have indicated they were told by their sources that these were summaries, taken from notes ...
