And if that was not sufficient, The New York Times chose to re-emphasize its message of a racist Israeli society as exemplified by soccer fans in yet another story, published nine days later, on Feb. 9, 2013. The only additional information to add to the topic was contained in the headline, “Fire Destroys Offices of Israeli Soccer Team,” hardly enough to warrant another entire article. Newsworthiness is all in the eye of the beholder.

Because what could possibly be newsworthy about that?

Rudoren’s sources have engaged in highly politicized, radical activity against Israel. For a journalist to cite them as objective sources is tantamount to pushing a biased agenda.

Does anyone know if CAMERA spams other sites that have user pages (like Kos diaries) or is it only LGF?

As I’ve posted before, like all cultural comoditities, sports is a reflection of society. I would say those Euro-teams are Representative just as much there society as Beitar, or at very least the worst of those societies.

Something I missed is that this isn’t just a story about Beitars racism, but also how that racism is tolerated by the Israeli FA. They levy moderate fines on fans and clear out stadiums once and a while, but the club, from fans to head office, is infected with racism, and if that is true, then it should not be playing in the IPL.

In a truly just football society, the FA could place a mandate on all teams: Israeli society is 20.4% Arab, therefor 20% of players on Israeli teams must be Arab. But that will never happen, because Beitar is Israel without the it’s filter.

re: #3 Billy the Weatherman

“Football” started out as a medieval sport between rival towns which was akin to warfare. The English kings tried to ban it to no avail because of the violence.

I think this element is still involved in the sport’s DNA to this day. Fans view their football team (aka soccer) as their country and the fans as their fellow citizens.

Sometimes they are racists but the football hooligan fan actually views as an enemy anyone not from his club.

There was also a time before there were mass deaths at games when authorities looked the other way to this violence - seeing it as a pressure release valve for the masses (believe it or not) - let them blow off steam at the game before they come back to the factory on Monday, etc.

What utter buushit

By that standard and logic only 13.1% of the NBA should be African American (their percentage of the US population). For that matter, 50.8% should be female!!

It would be weird, and kinda fun, to see an NBA team that is 37% obese. They could call it Fatsketball. Yujk-yuk-yuk!

re: #5 sattv4u2

It would be analogous if black people where systematically kept out of the NBA. It would be better to discuss the Boston Celtics in the mid to late 80s, which was a racist team and the NBA should have stepped in to mandate black players in that city.

It also ignores the social and economic factors in which lead to over-representation in sports such as basketball and football by African Americans.

OTOH, there is still an under-representation of African American Coaches in the highest levels of sports. Currently, 12.5% of NFL head coaches are African-American. The number of minority head coaches hovers around 6% in college sports, which is significantly lower than the 12.4% of the total US population which is African-American. Does that mean that Black coaches are less capable, or that there is an institutional bias against black coaches? This is why we have the Rooney Rule, which states that NFL teams must interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs. the overall percentage of African American coaches had jumped to 22%, up from 6% prior to the Rooney Rule. And even people are saying that is broken.

As for woman, gender segregated sports has a long history, but I do think that there is a chance for change in that too. Billie Jean King beat Riggs for example. Woman can be just as good as men and where possible should be able to play against men.

I think for the short term we need to focus more on extending Title 9 rights and the promotion of woman’s sports on television, but I do see a day where the ‘gender bar’ is broken by a woman Jackie Robinson.

 Frank says:

The family was from Arkansas. The Dad (Dink) was a furniture salesman in San Bernardino, but back in the way-back-when he used to play 'bones' or 'spoons' in a minstrel show. To relive the golden days of yesteryear he would, from time to time, force his children to accompany him (Ronnie on guitar, Kenny on trombone) in a living room replay of a minstrel routine called "Lazy Bones."

The kids often found this to be an inconvenience, as they were fascinated by, and constantly perfecting new techniques for, The Manly Art Of Fart-Burning. Kenny explained to me that it was scientific - that it demonstrated (this is a real quote) "Compression, ignition, combustion and exhaust." -- Kenny & Ronnie Williams (later immortalized in "Let's Make The Water Turn Black").
