Being the daughter of southern liberal Quakers and the Great Granddaughter of a southern man who fought for the union. People in my family have been saying this for years.
But we must also remember that eventually it wasn’t just the south. Many people had to stand by and watch how bitter Southerners used sleazy fear tactics and loud mouth violent propaganda to whip up sympathy even from the north. Remember Birth of a Nation? Gone with the Wind? the popularity of the KKK? Sundown towns even in the North? Jim Crow Laws?
After more progressive thought entered the south right after the civil war, their was an intentional effort to fight against the resentful elite. Their was a white governor from Mississippi or Alabama, Can’t remember which right now who fell in love and married a black woman from New York. Not only did he remain the Governor but he was reelected. Someone once pointed out that probable couldn’t even happen today!
But I also think there are a few more circumstances also added to it to help feed the flame.
However, the North will have the last laugh. The North’s less regressive culture meant, that it has survived, albeit in an altered form compared to the North during the days of the Civil War.
The South has been more insular, and immigrants to the South don’t become Southern. What we are living through now is the final decades of the South as a cultural unit. By middle to end of the century, what is culturally the south will have been regulated to the furthest backwaters of that region.
