The main thing a student at one of these for profit schools will learn is how to apply for government guaranteed school loans. If the loans didn’t exist, neither would these schools.

It’s actually worse than that. Our local NPR station here in Nashville had a long piece on the school a week or two ago. They weren’t meeting the standards of improvement that are required to keep their charter and they (the school) was trying to get things changed to keep it.

This is supported by your local tax dollars getting diverted in the form of Vouchers. The For Profit company is doing this in a number of states, they contract with some small rural school district so they are technically under their jurisdiction, but they operate state wide.

The whole charter school phenomenon is a tragedy. Hopefully we’ll be able to stop it before it squeezes a huge amount of public resources into private hands, but given the past 30 years of upwards wealth transfer I’m not optimistic.

There will always be a place for small alternative schools operating alongside the main public school system, but the fact all these private schools are laying bare (which is obvious if you actually think about it) is that educating a large range of kids from diverse backgrounds is a hard thing to do, with no silver bullets.

I laugh whenever I see one of these “new management style yields results at inner city school” stories. Sure. Get back to me in five years’ time, when everyone’s settled, the paint has started to fade, and your idealistic teachers have discovered that without a union contract, teaching is a long hard slog* from which you can be fired at a moment’s notice if an influential parent gets on the wrong side of you.

* At times. Teaching is also vastly rewarding.

This is all due those liberals who give trophies to both teams no matter who wins, and give participation prizes! If this was a Conservative school they would only reward those who have earned their accolades!

Oh wait…

I knew as soon as the GOP and other propheteers(not misspelled) started pushing “Charter Schools” and private academies such as the Evangelical programing compound here in Lancaster that this would come to no good. I have no problem with the well established private schools and academies that exist in some of our larger municipalities that educate properly and do not program by fear. These “E” schools are still in their infancy but I predict as this report shows, that they too will be subject to the ravages of greed, improper management, unvetted staff and student fraud.Even home schooling falls far,far short of PROPER education and social development, not to mention the in ability to compete with normaly schooled students for college placement and grade acheivement. If the public school system had not been slowly strangled to near death by the Christian Far Right and the Propheteers then we would have the educational quality that I grew up with in the 60’s and 70’s.

re: #4 Major Tom

Your posting reminds me of the argument that Mr.Incredible and his wife Elastigirl had about Dasch competing in sports and the “graduation” from the 4th to 5th grade and the attempt to make gifted the same as mediocre in achievement…just a thought..

 Frank says:

There were 45 men in the jail cell, the toilet and shower had never been cleaned, the temperature was 110 degrees so you couldn't sleep night or day, there were roaches in the oatmeal, sadistic guards, and everything that was nice. -- Zappa 1969 interview. This had happened during the days of Studio Z in Cucamonga (1963). Frank was released on bail (his father took out a bank loan to pay for it). Frank had been busted for "conspiracy to commit pornography," after making a silly recording of suggestive sexual sounds (giggling edited out) for someone who had asked him to provide a "special" tape recording for a stag night. That someone turned out to be Detective Willis of the San Bernadino Vice Squad. Their conversation was recorded by a hidden microphone and this was used as evidence at Zappa's trial.
