I think maybe I’m going to start watching a soap opera or something.

How in God’s name do you play enough video poker to lose over $100 million per year for nine straight years?

Whew. I was afraid it was Sandra Day O’Connor. I would have been crushed.

I must say, I’m kinda impressed, to bet a billion, and only need to steal 2 million to do that…that’s a REALLY good record.

OK, I know she probably maxed out her credit cards and mortgaged everything, but still.

My first thought was Cardinal O’Connor. I need to get with the times…I just figured out he died 12-13 years ago.

It looks as if the $1B number is a bit misleading - that was the total amount of her losses (say you add up all your losing hands in poker). But the source also says that her winnings over that time were also around $1B. So her net loss is presumably much less. I would guess it’s more in line with the $2M figure.

I guess the main takeaway is: don’t expect a journalist to do HARD MATH for you, or to report the real number when there’s a MUCH BIGGER one available.

That just makes it worse, time-wise. She spent enough time playing video poker to both win and lose an average of over $100 million annually for nine straight years. I don’t know how much you can gamble per hand playing video poker, but I would think this would have to be the equivalent of a full-time job. Its really sad how what was once an accomplished and productive women became a poker zombie. She wasted nine years of her life, and destroyed a charity that once did some good in her community.

Sundays With the Christianists: A Biology Textbook That Explains Science Is Mostly Atheists Making Things Up
there is no history of evolution recorded either by man or by fossils. This lack of evolutionary records does not disturb most evolutionists because they believe they have a model of how evolution took place. This model is often illustrated by a phylogenetic tree -- a line-up of organisms based on how they are supposedly related in an attempt to show the path ...

We are in the midst of the worst Washington scandal since Watergate. The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they're seeing. The Justice Department assault on the Associated Press and the ugly politicization of the Internal Revenue Service have left the administration's credibility deeply, ...

4 Things We Should Remember When Arguing About Politics
Political discourse in America has reached levels of douchebaggery previously only theorized about but never observed, like conversational dark matter. We're in a whole new world of hating people based solely on their opinions on a few key issues, and since this is unexplored territory, our conversations about politics are usually only a couple notches beyond the "hold your breath until the other ...

It began with lyrics, but even looking at the PMRC fund raising letter in the last paragraph, at the bottom of the page, it starts looking like it's branching into other areas when it says 'We realize that this material's pervaded other aspects of society' and it's like 'What, you gonna fix it all for me?'
