Mark Levin’s Latest Paranoid Fantasy: ‘US Preparing for Societal Collapse by Buying Billions of Rounds of Ammo’
Mark Levin goes Alex Jones:
“I’m not talking about a recession,” Levin continued. “I’m talking about a collapse when people are desperate, when they can’t food and clothing, when they have no way of going from place to place, when they can’t protective themselves. There aren’t enough police officers on the face of the Earth to adequately handle a situation like that.”
===
“And having been close enough to law enforcement — not in law enforcement, but close enough to it in my days in the Justice Department — I expect that they’re running through these scenarios just in case. … I know why the government is arming up. It’s not because there’s going to be an insurrection. It’s because our society is unraveling.”
Levin argued that the federal government sees what is playing out in Europe and is preparing for that sort of scenario.
“You see what’s going on in Greece, in Spain and Portugal and other parts of the world? That’s what they fear, and yet, they’ve caused it.”
Here’s what’s interesting about this clip. Levin reads from a column by Andrew Malcolm, which says, in part:
In a puzzling, unexplained development, the Obama administration has been buying and storing vast amounts of ammunition in recent months, with the Department of Homeland Security just placing another order for an additional 21.6 million rounds.
Several other agencies of the federal government also began buying large quantities of bullets last year. The Social Security Administration, for instance, not normally considered on the frontlines of anything but dealing with seniors, explained that its purchase of millions of rounds was for special agents’ required quarterly weapons qualifications. They must be pretty poor shots.
But DHS has been silent about its need for numerous orders of bullets in the multiple millions. Indeed, Examiner writer Ryan Keller points out Janet Napolitano’s agency illegally redacted information from some ammunition solicitation forms following media inquiries.
According to one estimate, just since last spring DHS has stockpiled more than 1.6 billion bullets, mainly .40 caliber and 9mm. That’s sufficient firepower to shoot every American about five times. Including illegal immigrants.
To provide some perspective, experts estimate that at the peak of the Iraq war American troops were firing around 5.5 million rounds per month. At that rate, DHS is armed now for a 24-year Iraq war.
Sounds pretty scary, yes? Well, when you Google “department of homeland security buying up ammo” you’ll see links to a bunch of right wing blogs, including Alex Jones’ Infowars.
What you’ll also see is a link to Politifact Texas, which rates a chain email from March of last year titled “Why Did The DHS Just Order 450 Million Rounds of .40 Caliber Ammunition?” as being “Mostly False.”
Homeland Security has contracted to buy up to 450 million .40-caliber bullets — and that total exceeds the nation’s population. Significantly, though, the purchase contract covers five years; there’s no indication the agency is piling up the bullets in a hurry.
More significantly, we found nothing to support the email’s ominous suggestions. Rather, the large size of the contract is explained as a way for the government to buy in bulk to save money on ammunition used routinely for training officers in a wide variety of agencies.
We rate the email Mostly False.
And that’s the game.
