Too bad things have gotten this way .Crown Heights in my years ages 7-16 , people got along fine .Saturday activities never upset any of the Orthodox Lubavitchers ,or Satmars .The neighborhood was as diverse as a neighborhood could be . Everyone just got along . Really .

It looks like the yuppies moving in are trying to control things, pissing off both the Hasidim and the Caribbeans who were there before them.

Brooklyn is the new Manhattan. The term Yuppies is dated. What is happening is that rents are going up and new kinds of places are being opened to serve younger hipster kinds of crowds.

The rent increase for commercial shops means there is a loss of shops for things that an ethnic community needs (special foods, services) in favor of bars, eateries or coffee houses that a younger demographic wants. If you can’t afford the rents and the shops your community needs start to close or move to cheaper locations that destroys a community.

See Little Italy which only survives as a restaurant tourist trap these days rather than a neighborhood of apartments where Italians congregated.

Scheduling the meeting on a Saturday was just plain stupid. If it was Texas or Arizona or something I could understand the mistake, but Crown Heights? Puhleeze, I don’t know anyone in NYC who isn’t aware that Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath.

I guess that’s why some people were pissed about the bike corral? I read the linked article about it, but it didn’t mention any controversy over it.
