Not a surprise. Chaos is a great place to put a base of operations when you’re an international outlaw.

I am just happy AQ and the State Dept are on the same side again. Just like old times……

Well, this is the biggest, most violent conflict where Sunni Muslims are fighting and dying. Before it was Libya, now it’s Syria. It’s like a magnet for Al-Qaeda.

On the one hand Destro calls Hamas and Hezbollah freedom fighters, as to him Israeli’s are legitimate targets, yet the FSA are terrorists.
Strange fellah

I have never called Hamas and Hezbollah freedomfighters, dickhead.

I am pro Israel but against their settler led expansion into the occupied territories.

And I did not say the FSA are terrorists. The FSA are of course clearly allied with terrorists just like America is.

And I find it strange the neoconish types that are all up about Hamas and Hezbollah type of militants seem to excuse them away when it comes to similar types battling Assad’s regime. I guess the toss up is between fear of of Islamists or fear of nationalist Arabs and or Iran.

I am the only one here consistent in being against religious fundamentalist type militants even when they are on “our” side.

I think the take away Destro is trying to get at is it is good we didn’t fully commit to Syria. At least, that is what I’m happy about.

I’m surprised that nobody has tried to take the other side. From what I can tell there were people in the WH that argued for committing serious resources on the side of the rebels in order to deny Al-Qaeda and Jihadists a combat space to build up and train forces.

Personally, I think doing that would simply have masked those activities like they did in Libya. Committing western power behind “secular” forces might have dampened Al-Qaeda/Jihadi activities here, at least for awhile, but it wouldn’t have prevented it. And how much it would have suppressed AQ is questionable at best.

I said it over and over again, Obama holding back from fully going “interventionist” is a good thing.

Also, I have a theory from years of State Dept watching that when it comes to foreign policy in many cases the president is dealing with a sometimes independent power structure filled with career diplomats who implement policy and then tell the president what they did and that he just rubber stamps it which is why we see almost no difference between presidents when it comes to American foreign policy.

With that said, Obama seems to have indicated that he is for limited direct military intervention (there was talk before of NATO no fly zones, NATO serving as the airforce for the Syrian rebels, etc).

I don’t know if we have special forces or Saudi paid western mercenaries from the Blackwater types in Syria and if they are there if they are there in a training capacity only or direct combatants.

And last but not least I am chiding a little in reminding people that from Afghanistan, to Bosnia, to Kosovo, to Chechnya, to Libya to Syria, there has been a history of the USA being on the same side as jihadis have been (and in the case of Afghanistan had a hand in bringing this jihadist element to the fore).

I’m not sure what Earth you live on Destro but it certainly isn’t the one where hundreds of Americans and their allies have died fighting Terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq, Dickhead.
