Tweets, like so many other things on the web, are forever. So on that technicality alone, I say “damage done.”

I believe this is the first time in history the Onion has ever apologized or issued a correction.

That Twitter fail stirred up quite a shitstorm.

It’s a very fulsome and forthright apology. That it also promises checks to make sure this sort of thing won’t happen again is good.

I don’t think they’ll be hurt much at all.

Yeah, as far as public apologies go, this is one the best I’ve seen.

Yeah, as far as public apologies go, this is one the best I’ve seen.

I saw your comment in the Spy, and it reminded me of this apology that I didn’t get around to Paging last week.

The background:

The “racist rager” parties organized across U.S. college campuses shouldn’t come as a surprise anymore.

But a recent “phi-esta” party planned by members of a fraternity at the University of Southern California (USC) caught my eye for two reasons:

1) It was a Mexican-themed event and the USC campus is literally surrounded by Latinos: the communities that surround USC are all predominantly Latino. The most recent Census data also found Latinos make up 47.7% of the population in Los Angeles, with Mexicans making up the majority of the group.

2) A Mexican-American USC student saw a flyer for the party and wrote an op-ed in the school newspaper. She shut the party down, got the frat that was throwing the party to apologize and had the members organizing the event expelled from the fraternity. [more at the link]

The apology:

Letter to the editor

Posted February 20, 2013 (5 days ago) at 8:47 pm in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

In regard to Pi Kappa Phi’s “Phi-esta”

Fellow Trojans,

On behalf of the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, I would like to apologize for the insensitive statements made on the Facebook event description for our “Phiesta.”

We recognize that these statements were offensive and we want to take full accountability for the insensitivity of our actions. The statements made were not only offensive to Latinos and Hispanics, but to everyone in the Trojan Family. The brothers of Pi Kappa Phi recognize that our actions are unbecoming of the values of the Trojan community, and that, furthermore, our actions represent this university, as well as our national fraternity and Greek Life as a whole. We deeply regret having misrepresented our national fraternity and USC in this manner. Additionally, I would like to mention and thank USC Junior Melissa Morales, who, in writing a thoughtful letter to the Daily Trojan that accurately criticized our insensitivity, embodied the Trojan values of sticking to one’s beliefs.

The statements made in the event description do not reflect the beliefs or values of the Delta Rho Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. We are a brotherhood that deeply values our diversity and we will continue to be a brotherhood for men of all races and ethnicities. The individuals who were responsible for the Facebook event and the insensitive statements are being held responsible and will be facing expulsion from the fraternity. It is my hope that these individuals, and all of my brothers, will use this opportunity to grow as human beings.

Again, I would like to sincerely apologize on behalf of my brothers at Pi Kappa Phi. Thank you for taking the time to read this. If anyone wishes to contact us further, please do not hesitate.

Spencer Weissberg

President, Pi Kappa Phi

I have a lot more admiration for the woman who wrote the letter that got the event shut down than for the apologizer, and the apology didn’t stop a bunch of flak from flying her way, but it was a very good apology. It’s not a lost art yet!

I’m glad for the sake of Quvenzhane Wallis that they apologized, and I agree that it was a good apology sans any weaseling, but this isn’t something I’m willing to forgive & forget. That said, I’m sure The Onion will get along just fine without me, and I without them.

I’ll continue reading The Onion as long as they’re funny. They still usually are, this debacle aside.

I’ve stopped reading the Onion largely because of too many anti-Israel “parodies.” (And never one at the expense of, say, the Palestinians.)

Crazed Palestinian Gunman Angered By Stereotypes

HEBRON, WEST BANK—In an emotionally charged press conference Monday, crazed Palestinian gunman Faisal al Hamad expressed frustration over the stereotyping of his people.

“As a crazed Palestinian gunman, I feel hurt by the negative portrayal of my people in the media,” said al Hamad, 31, a Hebron-area terrorist maniac. “None of us should have to live with stereotyping and ignorance.”

He then began screaming and firing into a busload of Israeli schoolchildren.

Not that it excuses the action at all but this is how you apologize. You don’t make excuses or try to suggest that your words were misinterpreted or that it’s actually the subject of the apology’s fault. You admit where you were wrong and state how you plan to avoid it. I don’t know why the tweet happened in the first place. Just seemed stupid and not even funny to me.
