Maybe this guy should have a wingnut radio show instead of being a Supreme Court justice.

This is scary as hell followed on the heels of GOP voter suppression tactics nation wide.

WTF? Why are they concerned about the Voting Rights Act?

4 aagcobb  Wed, Feb 27, 2013 6:09:33pm

Can you imagine the nerve? Those blacks thinking they are entitled to vote? Clearly the Supreme Court needs to step in and disabuse them of this silly notion./

And this boys and girls is yet another reason why Scalia shouldn’t be the model for a Supreme Court justice yet watch every Republican candidate in 2016 for president say that we need more judges like him. He’s a fucking prick. He seems to have no regard to why these laws were created in the first place and I have no doubt had he been on the Warren Court in the 60’s, he’d be ruling in favor of segregation with a smile on his face.

Serious question:

What happens when the Voting Rights Act is functionally voided?

No, really. What happens?

7 Achilles Tang  Wed, Feb 27, 2013 7:29:27pm

Scalia is like the Pope, except he won’t resign. He is a biblical literalist (being the constitution as the bible), and that is by our system. We get what we inherit.

No federal challenges on voter suppression by states.

No, really. What happens?

Voter suppression galore and virtually no ability to challenge it.

WTF? Why are they concerned about the Voting Rights Act?

The VRA stopped a great deal of the voter suppression attempts during the last election.

And they aren’t concerned about it, they want to kill it.

Scalia has a 30 year history of opposing the voting righs act , and his recent comments prove it . If ever a Justice should RECUSE himself from this issue , Scalia is the posterboy .
Unfortunately his reasoning, which is nothing more than a sarcastic smack in the face to ALL Americans and their RIGHT to vote ,presents a possibility of VRA SECT. 5 beng overturned .
What can be done ? make sure any politician from ANY state ,voting against renewal , should SOTUS overturn it , be vehemently opposed in the voting booth , branded as an enemy of the Constitution , and an enemy of the people ,seeking to supress their right to vote . Indeed that sarcastic remark by Scalia that politicians fearing the loss of votes should ensure its renewal , is indicative of this man’s anti-Constitutional position .

This case won’t functionally void the VRA.

re: #12 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut

With the other frustrations going on (personal here, partially why I have withdrawn in the past week), I really, really want to paint Conservatives as the KKK.

14 ProBosniaLiberal  Thu, Feb 28, 2013 9:06:58am

At this point, the Democrats need to paint this as killing the Voting Rights Act.

Is it true? Maybe, maybe not. But it will drive an anti-Conservative Hysteria.

Russ Campbell’s Blog: Bill C-23, Fair Elections Act Seems Now on Solid Ground
Now that a Senate committee has recommended nine changes to Bill C-23, Fair Elections Act, the legislation seems pretty solid. And, since Pierre Poilievre has, apparently, indicated privately that he's open to changes, an amended version of the bill will likely become law by this summer. We would probably have gotten to this point earlier had not the minister responsible for the bill ...

Why the Temperature of the Yellow Sea Is a Big Deal, and Other Questions About the South Korean Ferry Disaster
The boat ran into trouble several dozen miles from Jindo, an island that sticks out of South Korea's southwestern corner like a little toe. Jindo is surrounded by a group of even smaller islands that are slightly farther afield from the mainland. The ferry was curving around those small islands at the time it issued a distress call. What caused the disaster? We ...

Calgary stabbings: How knife crime in Canada can cause ‘moral panic’
What Calgary police chief Rick Hanson called the "worst mass murder" in the city's history didn't end at the barrel of a gun. Instead, the 22-year-old suspect identified on Tuesday as Matthew de Grood is accused of entering the kitchen at a house party, taking "a large knife" and using it to fatally stab four men and one woman, all of whom were students ...

New York Electoral College: State Joins National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
Ben Mathis-Lilley, Slate: New York Electoral College: State Joins National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Instead of pushing for a Constitutional amendment, which would have to be ratified in 38 states, advocates ask individual state legislatures to pass an agreement: that they'll pledge all their presidential electors to the winner of the national popular vote as soon as enough other states pass the law to ...

The Rocket Boys In the late 1930s, a group of Caltech graduate students were booted off campus after blowing up (part of!) their building during a rocket test gone awry.
