Nah! I think that stuff would more likely suffocate you instead. If its strong enough to help you survive a crash, then it’s not likely you’ll be able to break yourself out by hand.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to make a more practical fictitious product real: Final Fantasy VIII style gunblades!

Keep your BS detectors in good, working order. The hype in this field is getting pretty thick. (Three *months* of machine time monopolizing a hideously expensive machine in order to produce the non-structural parts of an enclosed quasi-motorcycle?!)

Only three months for what is essentially prototype level production, using only one machine? That’s pretty impressive.

It’s probably useful to ask how many machine hours are involved in producing a modern car. It is not the 18 hours at the assembly plant. It’s the hours making each of the parts starting with processed materials. (In other words we don’t need to add the cost of mining and refining. But everything after that needs considered.) And again, the difference between prototype and production comes into play.

I’ll point out this is still a make-and-assemble machine. It isn’t being built from one huge printer. Because of that we know that production time can be significantly reduced just by adding more printers. If - to pull a number out of my butt - there are ten pieces to be assembled, then ten printers will nominally cut the ~2500 hours to ~250 hours, or just under two weeks to print and assemble the car.

I agree there is some excess hype about the 3d printing, but this element isn’t one of the wake-up calls.
