Great essay from Michael Tomasky about the issues in the GOP today.

One of my favorite segments:

They’re like a family in deep denial at the Thanksgiving table. Guys, debating the best way to cook brussels sprouts is of marginal utility. Whether Cousin Ruthie wears her hair this way or that way is not worth dwelling on. The overwhelming fact at hand is that Uncle Ralph is drunk again, and he’s being a belligerent racist homophobic ass again, and he is preventing any civility and progress from taking place, and it’s been this way for four Thanksgivings in a row, and you are intentionally choosing to say nothing about it.

I encourage to read the whole thing. Unsurprisingly, Tomasky is being savaged in some of the comments for being a “leftist”.

People like Michael Tomasky are the problem to the drooling loons in the CULT AKA the Tea Party/GOP. Purity tests for all. See you at the bonfire after the torch light parade.

The reason the GOP (and to my readings on blogs everyone in the GOP base seems to declare they are not Republicans but really “conservatives” that vote Republican) has become so - well - loony tunes - is that deep down they know they worship a “god that failed”. Their ideology does not work. If it does work (and it does not), most of the country does not like how it works. They used to think it did work and fooled many voters into accepting the right wing world view on some elements of economics and sociology but not any longer - the people know that the temple idols are false.

And the right wing can’t go back because their political ideology is linked to a tribal, religious and dare I say racial ideology.

Also, I am going to go out of the box on this - the economic ideology of the right wing was always a curtain - a beard.

The right wing in America was for small and limited govt because they wanted a weak federal govt that could not enforce civil rights to protect minorities and women (starve the govt to kill it).

They can’t admit their free market over limited govt ideology is a failure because what would they have left to hide their racism behind? That is why they can’t really let go of it in the face of evidence that shows their economic world view fails.
