Bruce Carroll Resigns From Gay Republican Group GOProud To Explore Lindsey Graham Challenge

Bruce Carroll, outgoing co-founder of gay Republican group GOProud, thinks Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has served in Washington for long enough.

In an open letter posted to Gay Patriot on Monday, Carroll announced his resignation from GOProud, saying he was moving on to weigh his options for challenging Graham:

Last week, speculation grew in South Carolina and on social media outlets about my interest in challenging incumbent US Senator Lindsey Graham who has been in Congress for 18 years.

In the spirit of transparency and honesty, I informed my fellow GOProud board members that I could not dedicate the time to the organization while I seriously considered the effort it will take to challenge Senator Graham in the 2014 Primary.

I’d advise Carroll to save his money. Running as a gay man in SC won’t help him win a senate election at this time in the state’s history because there are still too many South Carolinians who believe being gay is a “choice,” and that God “hates” gays, when neither of these is true.

Yes, but the contrast of an openly gay man running against a so obviously closeted gay man would be comedy gold.

If his campaign against Graham is unsuccessful, he’ll have the experience under his belt to launch a heckuva Turkeys for Thanksgiving campaign, which is essentially the same as belonging to GOProud.

Maybe, but if he could pull it off, it would be an incredible sign of progress to have two gay men, only one of them closeted, running in a GOP primary for the US Senate. Maybe SC voters are ready to vote for an openly gay candidate instead of a closeted one.

My understanding of GOProud is that it’s the teabagger party for gays. Watching Huckleberry lurch even farther to the right while pretending he’s the gay-hating Jesus candidate would be golden. I hope it happens.

GOProud is for wealthy, white gay men who’s money and whiteness matters more than their gayness. You take away the gay and they all fit the profile of a conservative white male: assholes lacking empathy for others.
