LOLOL…..defending against a “N.Korean Attack ” does not a good missle defense system make .

Tell that to Japan and South Korea. Who also have ground based anti missile installations BTW.

It all depends on expectations. Any defense can be overwhelmed. However, if all you are defending against is a few missiles, then yeah we’re good to go. S. Korea and Japan need a bit of an itchy finger to shoot them down, but Israel’s Iron dome has shown it is possible.

The real problem for S. Korea is not missile related, but Artillery. Seoul is within range of somewhere like 1000 tubes of artillery. The capital could be devastated within a week, and as we’ve seen in Gaza and Lebanon it can be really difficult to get well entrenched and hidden emplacements.

Good points. I still doubt it is realistic to stop hundreds of Russian missiles coming over the north pole (the old Star Wars scenario).

Missile defence, at least against ICBMs and IMRMs, won’t be practical until there are fairly cheap, directed energy weapons. i.e. lasers or charged/neutral particle projectors. The missiles are moving too fast and even the slightest deviation intercept course means a miss. You won’t usually get a second shot.

I believe those aren’t too far off though.

Sorry , I should have accentuated a sarcasm . To defend the US against a missle attack from N.Korea . is not saying much for a viable “star wars type system ” . It is highly unlikely if not impossible for N.Korea to launch and accurately target an ICBM at the US . I would think China as well as anyone within the range of an errant missile should be concerned about N.Korea launching a Nuke .

Against the amount of tube artillery the Norks have pointed at Seoul there is no viable active defense.

Iron Dome might work if it doesn’t set off the warhead.

Okay well there never will be star wars. It’s a straw man.

What we have is a fledgling ability to stop incoming. Beats the heck out of nothing. It’s a growing program. Growing in reliability and scope.

I think people forget that surprise sometimes happens. NK may well get the capacity to strike here sooner or later than expected. But let me say why I think this kind of hyper expensive program pays. Even a conventional missile attack that hits it’s targets would spark a wider war. Stop that missile from going off and you have a incident that can be dealt with more peacefully.

Stop a nuke and you save a lot of lives and a further use of nuclear weapons. That at the end of the day is why I favor these programs.

re: #10 Political Atheist

Don’t get me wrong , I am strongly in favor of a missle defense system . To say we are safe from an attack by N.Korea is a given . No missle defense at all would keep us safe from a N.Korean attack they have no ICBM capability , and for them to develop such would take testing which would be obvious . At the moment they cant get a missle to the middle of the Pacific.
That is not to say that S.Korea , Japan , even China are safe from a N. Korea “misguided missle ” .
