Hm. Obviously this is great in the context of advancing civil rights, but once again it’s kind of a bitter pill to swallow when conservatives give up their dickish views simply because it affects them or members of their own families.

How about giving a shit about other people’s gay kids who can’t get married? Or is that an empathy step too far?

He’ll just be spit out by the Republican Party, labeled a RINO and a commie and be primaried away ASAP.

Easy to judge when it’s others you are judging, isn’t it? Now that it’s a loved one suddenly the ugliness and hate is directed at yours and it’s not nice is it? Not nice at all. Reality and sense has come to Sen. Rob Portman. May it come to more.

You wrote what I was thinking and you wrote it well. The basis of empathy is to care for another’s problems even when they are not your own.

I am of a couple minds about this. One is glad he’s had a change of heart and glad he’s not being a jerk like Alan Keyes was to his gay child. Another more cynical part has me wondering why it just took this for him to realize that gays and lesbians should have equality under the law. So, yeah I am with everyone else. Where was Portman’s empathy when gay and lesbian children of other people were being used as scapegoats by his party and ideology? And will he call it out? I hate to be cynical but I’d like to see some action by Portman here.

That’s exactly what Atrios said at Eschaton— “He has empathy for his family, but no one else.”

Well, I’d prefer Portman had come to this position out of respect for the dignity of mankind in general, rather than on account of his son’s coming out. However, I’m happy to see Portman take this stand anyway. It’s progress.

That’s already happened: freerepublic.com

Edit: Well, except for the being primaried part.

I guess he’s not planning on running again, then.
