Hmmm. I wish there was a little more info on their business. I can understand the FAA’s side from a safety point of view. My opinion would depend at what altitude they’re flying the drones. Anything over 500’ would be a danger to other aircraft.

I am looking to use a quadcopter to get artistic or commercial shots. Maybe just hire a guy with the copter and get that shot for the local real estate guy and make some $$. What I would think I would be allowed to do is commercial work withing the established specs for RC planes. Altitude, distance and size limits accepted. To me that privilege (right?) should be assumed and built right in.

Fly next to a wedding for fun? No problem. Fly by a wedding party to get the sunset and it’s illegal because I charged fir it?

If this gets a it out of hand withing those rules civil law allows for any damages to be taken care of. We do not need the FAA to tell me my RC /webcam copter is illegal as soon as I earn a buck with it.

I agree , flying aircraft over metro areas is a hazard to navigation for other craft that may operate in the area , and possibly people on the ground . Should this fuel an argument for government intrusion ? Only to the ignorant .

You may have missed my point in 2.
What of those staying withing established boundaries for RC flight?

Ignorant? Ignorant of what information? What have they missed?

I think that the FAA may be doing this so that some still yet to be determined ground rules are established. The safety of the airways is paramount to any other ‘rights’, when it comes to this.

Granted this could be a tremendous benefit to all sorts of entrepreneurs. We can’t just have everyone going willy-nillie all over the place. 500 ft at the approach end of for an aircraft on final would be extremely hazardous.

I’m all for getting this stuff going, but baby steps should be the way to go.

But for this particular company, what altitude were they flying the drone? I would hope not higher than the treetops but if so, you’d get crap photos flying that low.

Just recently there was a drone spotted by a jet approaching JFK, came within a couple hundred feet of the airliner I believe. I don’t think allowing a free for all on drones is safe, regulations have to be put into place.

My point is we do not have a free for all. There are rules already for RC craft. Withing them we don’t have the issues you describe. of course rules can be broken, I have no problem with enforcing them.
