These are pretty common, but usually the company charges everyone the same rate and then offers a discount to those who volunteer for the health screening. 79% of companies who offer these screenings provide them via the “discount” method; only 5% use the “fine” method.

I’m not sure what the big problem is as long as the program complies with medical privacy laws. This seems to be a positive part of socializing medical costs, and preventive care and early treatment are a big part of keeping costs down. A lot of these screenings offer free follow-up programs (administered by 3rd parties) to help people with problems.

I find it a much bigger outrage that companies can require you to let them view your credit history. And that stuff isn’t handled by 3rd parties, it goes straight to HR and into your permanent file.

This sucks. You can’t bully people into losing weight. Sometimes a person does everything right, eats normally, avoids junk, stays active but just can’t drop those 30 lbs. You know that the contestants on “Biggest Loser” after being bullied into following a starvation/torture workout & diet program during the run of the show, gain all the weight back when they can’t sustain the punishing regimen they had to endure.

Our bodies evolved to withstand famine by holding on to body fat. Over the centuries, those skinny people who can eat and eat and not gain a gram would have starved to death. Today their body type is prized as “perfect” but those whose ancestors survived famines are genetically programmed to be starvation resistant.

Please explain how this is in any way ‘socializing’ medical costs.

It seems a bit “big brother-ish” to me.

“Big government” or “Big Boss”

Same song, different producer.

For one, early detection and prevention should reduce future Medicare costs. There’s no question the ACA promotes screenings and wellness (even mandating screenings in coverage) with this goal in mind. I think a corporation that encourages screenings (whether through discounts or fines) is part of this effort to reduce public costs (as well as their own).
