The ratings wars do not go by the intra channel ratings, they look at the overall, the share of all the viewers. In other words his ratings sucked compared to the big competition. Moving the goalpost like that is misleading. “Always consistent” Democracy Now. Yea consistently advocating a mid to far left position. His anti war stance was making it harder to get the ratings.

From your link

AMY GOODMAN: And yet, you were the most popular show.

PHIL DONAHUE: Well, often we led the night for the—nobody burned the town down on MSNBC, including me. Fox just ran away with the ratings and continues to enjoy that success.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: You wonder, though, if another—if another move to war came, how liberal it would remain.

PHIL DONAHUE: Well, you know, the coin of the realm is the size of the audience. It’s important to see this. When a broadcasting executive gets out of bed in the morning, before his foot hits the floor, his thoughts are ratings. “What are my ratings?” Not unlike Wall Street people, who get their—and CEOs, their first thought is the price of their stock. So, you know, what—and I was replaced by Michael Savage. So there was a desperate need to get numbers.

Internal MSNBC memos show he was fired due to his antiwar stance. End of story.

Please, no lessons in consistency from a “right wing conspirator” turned “political atheist”.

What do you think would have happened if his anti war position helped his ratings? Upped his share? Not fired right? The real causation here is the ratings not the politics. That’s how broadcast media works. Just FYI, RWC was tongue in cheek. P.A. is how I describe my disdain for the republican and democratic parties. Being right is not how you keep your major media job. It sucks but that is what it is.

Do you disagree with my assessment of Democracy Now?

Okay, sorry for not spotting that tongue-in-cheek. (Someone said the Internet is where irony goes to die.)

Kindly accepted, you would have to have been paying attention to my early posts around here to know that. I don’t mind banter & friendly debate with democrats, greens or republicans.

One other caveat-My view of how the media is run is influenced by my location. My neighborhood practically lives on entertainment/media/motion picture production. Poolside chat is often industry insider gripes or brags.

Just so. Donahue did better than other MSNBC hosts of the time but Bill O’Reilly consistent beat Donahue by large margins. At the time MSNBC thought it could get better ratings in the time slot with someone less anti-Iraq War and so they dumped Donahue to do that. No skullduggery was in play, save that inherent to television.
