These are the types Assange cavorts with, anonymous is deeply racist, yet people fancy them as freedom fighters.

Ain’t the internet wonderfull ! If we haven’t reached there yet , the internet and it’s denizens will reach the lowest levels of human behavior that their egos can aspire to .

The internet is awesome. If you don’t like it there is always print. We are living in a time with declining crimes and wars compared to the pre-internet age so what exactly is worse now than existed before the internet age?

Oh those intellectual Europeans. Always making us Americans look dumb.

Much more damage can be wreaked in much less time by very few people .
“declining crimes and wars “??? Where the heck are you living? If anything the internet facilitates a whole different category of crimes . As for wars , I doubt any can be attributed to or by the internet .

NO , there are indeed a number of Americans who ARE DUMB . And ” dumb ” just like ” stupid ” is spread out homogeneously throughout all populations and is no respector of color or creed.

The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined

We’ve all asked, “What is the world coming to?” But we seldom ask, “How bad was the world in the past?” In this startling new book, the bestselling cognitive scientist Steven Pinker shows that the world of the past was much worse. In fact, we may be living in the most peaceable era yet. Evidence of a bloody history has always been around us: the genocides in the Old Testament and crucifixions in the New; the gory mutilations in Shakespeare and Grimm; the British monarchs who beheaded their relatives and the American founders who dueled with their rivals. Now the decline in these brutal practices can be quantified. Tribal warfare was nine times as deadly as war and genocide in the 20th century. The murder rate in medieval Europe was more than thirty times what it is today. Slavery, sadistic punishments, and frivolous executions were unexceptionable features of life for millennia, then were suddenly abolished. Wars between developed countries have vanished, and even in the developing world, wars kill a fraction of the numbers they did a few decades ago. Rape, hate crimes, deadly riots, child abuse — all substantially down. How could this have happened, if human nature has not changed? Pinker argues that the key to explaining the decline of violence is to understand the inner demons that incline us toward violence and the better angels that steer us away. Thanks to the spread of government, literacy, trade, and cosmopolitanism, we increasingly control our impulses, empathize with others, debunk toxic ideologies, and deploy our powers of reason to reduce the temptations of violence. Pinker will force you to rethink your deepest beliefs about progress, modernity, and human nature.

re: #8 Aligarr

What I meant by “Americans make Americans look dumb” is that the USA is a financial and military super power.

If it comes across as dumb it is because Americans did it to themselves because America pretty much is so rich and powerful we are untouchable unless we do something stupid and that creates a blowback.

Case in point? Arming, celebrating and training religious fundamentalist Muslims to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan and thinking once that war was over these jihadis would go home and resume their peaceful lives. 9/11 thus us a case of our stupid foreign policy blowingback at us. There would have been no al-Qaeda if the USA did not funnel untold dollars into creating a jihad network in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

11 Aligarr  Mon, Apr 1, 2013 8:48:46am

Ok Destro , but then that blowback goes all the way back to the the Coup in Iraq which brought Saddam to Power and the Sha of iran whom we supported and refused to turnover to the Ayatollah Komeini , which led to the Embassy takeover and hostages under Carter . Follow the steps from there . I agree with you .Stupid moves ever since .But not all by Al Queda , Iran has a lot to do with events .

re: #11 Aligarr

Like I said, they are self inflicted wounds. The USA is so big and powerful that no other nation can make America look foolish - we do it to ourselves. That was my point.

PS: Get the book above at your local library.
