University of North Carolina Student: Administrator Told Me ‘Rape Is Like Football’
Another student of the university, Andrea Pino, told CNN that school officials accused her of laziness after she reported lasting trauma from being raped.
Clark and Pino, along with two other students and a former assistant dean, filed a 34-page complaint earlier this year with the U.S. Department of Education. Clark accused the university of acting “with deliberate indifference.”
One of the other students who filed the complaint, Landen Gambill, faced the threat of expulsion by the university’s Honor Court because of it. Her alleged rapist and ex-boyfriend claimed to be “intimidated” by the complaint, even though he was not named.
Gambill filed her own lawsuit against the university on Monday.
“In speaking out for change at UNC, Ms. Gambill is not ‘harassing’ or ‘intimidating’ her abuser, whom she has never named,” her attorney Clay Turner wrote to Chancellor Holden Thorp. “Rather, the university’s decision to press charges against Ms. Gambill has tragically provided her abuser with the opportunity to harass and intimidate her.”
