Republicans: 'Social Conservatives, we can't live with you, want to live without you'

The preferred plot line for many in the GOP establishment for revitalizing their party goes something like this: They move to a more libertarian stance on key social issues — particularly same-sex marriage — and the Bible-thumping, evangelical wing of the party meekly complies, realizing times have changed.

One problem with that scenario, however: The Christian Right, while a diminished force, doesn’t like how that story ends at all.

The only ones to blame are the Evangelicals themselves.

We have Christian centered parties all over the world, in particular in Europe, where the Christian Democrat parties (no relation to the American “Democrat” party nor Evangelical Christians) offer social conservative messages and political platforms, but tend to favor govt intervention in many cases (they think govt is essential for the society). Let us take abortion. The European Christian Democrats are against abortions, and in countries where abortion is legal they do all they can with govt programs like govt provided health care for children, govt funded day care, cash payments, etc to prevent abortions from happening.

In the USA we have conservative Christians somehow linked to a right wing ideology that is anti-govt and does not want the govt to help people and the only cases where social conservatives (America’s version of “Christian Democrats”) in the GOP want govt intervention is to police lifestyle issues rather than the govt help people through economic programs that are funded by taxes.

This American version of Christian conservative thus accepts a totally incompatible set of ideologies that calls for limited or no govt help to the poor - not even to ‘bribe’ mothers away from abortions which they tell us they hate with a passion yet also wants the gov (funded by taxes) to patrol who marries who, how consenting adults have sex (they want to ban certain sex acts), etc.

It is totally illogical a position and it only makes sense these fundamentalist Christians are voting GOP with such an illogical party doctrine for their beliefs if you feel these Christians were ‘duped’ by the economic conservatives in the GOP. The GOP leadership loved stirring up their Christian base - and they get to grift these rubes so their rich oligarchic masters can get their tax breaks and deregulated industries.

The GOP used these religious Republicans for all they were worth, once in a while throwing the evangelical right a bone by trying to arrest a porn star here or there, and nominating some seemingly right to life judges (who really were known for defending businesses in court cases more so than evangelical causes), and now that they rode this evangelical base as far as it can go they are making plans to dump it and move on.

I have zero sympathy for the evangelicals. They should have looked before they leaped. They allowed themselves to be bamboozled, so they deserve whatever they get. If, as they claim, they are soooo religious and such good Christians, they would have never sold their souls to the corporatists and their political shills, but they did. They fully embraced the teachings of Ayn Rand, never received any significant benefit from it, and were sustained for over 40 years with pledges from their politicians to “stop” all abortions and “stop” the gays. The country is changing on gay marriage, the GOP has to decide whether to continue discriminating against gay Americans or continue losing national elections. The evangelicals will now learn what the rest of us have known about GOPer politicians for years—they’ll get to see that for these politicians, political party is greater than any person/group of persons. Why they didn’t learn this sooner is beyond my ability to understand. Many of us have known this about GOPer politicians for years, but it seems like the GOPer rank and filers stuck their heads in the sand and denied that they, too, were fodder for the GOP bonfire. I can say that GOPer politicians ran a good scam for years and were very successful in convincing their supporters that the things they said about non-GOPers didn’t apply to them. They did/do.
