Basically, Malcolm Smith, who was previously a Democrat and always craved more power than he could achieve through elections, sought to get into the mayor’s race and was considering doing so as a Republican since it was viewed as an easier path than a tight and tough Democatic party field (Quinn is seen as the frontrunner, Liu, the City Controller, and Thomson, who nearly beat Bloomberg despite being massively outspent).

He needed to get county/borough leaders to buy into this - literally. That’s where the corruption and scandal comes from.

Smith was buying access to the mayor’s race by buying the political leaders of Queens and the Bronx.

And I have NO DOUBT that if this gets picked up in the right-wing blog / forum Septic System of Stupidity that 3 things will happen.

1. They will key on the fact that Smith is a DEMOCRAT (and totally miss the fact that he was thinking of running as a Republican, and that the other persons arrested were all Republicans.

2. I also am sure that somebody will suggest, and be totally serious about it, “He’s obviously a DemonCrap Agent, and did this to make the Republican Party look bad”. I wasn’t aware that the Democratic party had sleeper agents that upon command would commit felonies for them.

3. Somebody will dig up all his old votes, contributions and speeches to find something they don’t like and proudly proclaim “Well, he’s not OUR kind of Republican, so good riddance anyhow”.

I wish I wasn’t as confident of these statements as I am, but I’m 99.98% sure that it will play out just as I imagine. (Always leave some wiggle room)

Who keeps looking to fdisk the whole system and try a different one.
