If you think an AWB is tough, try to imagine a course of action (philosophically, politically, and constitutionally) that could separate suspected mental cases from their guns.

In a sensible system it would be easier to draft something that addresses specific apparent dangers than blanket one size fit all bans. Blanket bans effect those who do not deserve to have their rights reduced. That should matter.

Can anyone explain the psychosis involved here in generalities? Is it detectable enough to test for and stop arms purchases? What drives a person to do this?

My guess as to why he did it? The motive?

I assumed this man was failing in school, probably because of failing mental health, after being told he was brilliant all his life. If he was a narcissistic personality then this would have created anger at himself and the outside world.

His mass murder scheme was to hit back at society in general and then he planned to be killed by the police in “suicide by cop” scenario? And then he chickened out of the “suicide by cop” plan at the last minute? Maybe horrified the fantasy of mass killing did not match the awful reality? I guess at this because he warned police his apartment was booby trapped, why would he warn the police unless he had a sort of remorse effect happening to him?

re: #3 Destro

I have no idea, and that stuff is likely confidential at least for now.

To me the way to handle these people (meaning those whose trained/credentialed mental health pro says is a threat to himself or others) is to get them help. The kind of help that at least takes the most dangerous symptoms away.A credible mental health system or lack thereof makes a real difference in these cases. Some people will have to give up the close possession of guns. Not necessarily by law, but by obligation and responsibility. Suicidal kid in the house? Get the guns out of reach. Severely depressed spouse? Ditto.

Anyway with enough supervision this tragedy could have been prevented. Leave no stone unturned is how I like to say it. Gun regulations and much more outreach to the mentally ill, starting with those thought to be dangerous.

re: #4 Political Atheist

I hate to say it but there will be those conspiracy minded people that will sort of use the ogre of what the Soviets did in declaring enemies of the state as mentally insane. The Soviets actually did not really lock up dissidents in mental hospital that much when they had all those Gulags ready and waiting - it is more of a Cold War myth (- like the Soviets using poison gas or mines shaped like toys in Afghanistan - that did not happen and can link articles if requested) so I assume we would see a lot of resistance to mental health professionals from the right.

In fact, these days with the mental health profession not classifying homosexuality as being wrong, etc I see an almost Scientology level hostility to that profession by the right wing.

PS: The story that the Soviets were boobytrapping toys in Afghanistan arose from the use of culster bombs. If you look at unexploded cluster munitions they look like “toys” and villagers in Afghanistan who were not that sophisticated assumed they were toys with bombs in them.

PPS: The claim the Soviets used Chemical warfare arose from the so called “Yellow Rain” claims Some samples of the supposed chemical agent that were supplied to a group of independent scientists turned out to be honeybee feces, suggesting that the “yellow rain” was due to mass defecation of digested pollen grains from large swarms of bees.

I wanted to get that put of the way because I probably will be challenged about it.
