Here’s PETA’s general response to these ongoing allegations.

Judge for yourself. I haven’t studied this closely enough yet to take a position.

The simple fact is that PETA as an organization does not believe that anyone should keep any kind of domesticated animal as a pet. Just read their own words from their site…

We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals’ best interests if the institution of “pet keeping”—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as “pets”—never existed. The international pastime of domesticating animals has created an overpopulation crisis; as a result, millions of unwanted animals are destroyed every year as “surplus.”

This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. They are restricted to human homes, where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to.

They do euthanize perfectly healthy and adoptable animals, because the stated goal of their organization is to eradicate the practice of keeping all types of domesticated animals!

Many people seem to have the idea that PETA only wants to stop the use of animals for food, heck a lot of people don’t even realize that much. Some seem to believe that PETA is only fighting for the humane treatment of domesticated food animals rather than their complete elimination. But it isn’t only the “non-wild” breeds of cows, chickens, pigs, and turkeys that PETA wants to see exterminated, it is also our dogs, cats, horses, etc..

The licensed Virginia “shelter” the link you posted is defending is in their headquarters, it has no adoption web site, showing area, or public viewing hours. If they do want to see these animals get adopted then they seem to have a very peculiar way of going about it.

The link says that they are just the innocent victims of a meat industry funded negative publicity campaign. That still does not explain the fact that considerably more than 90% of all animals that go inside their “shelter” will never exit alive. Ever watched “Animal Rescue” or “Animal Cops” on TV? They also routinely deal with dreadfully sick and horribly injured animals, the difference being that they manage to save many of them and find them homes.

One has to think that PETA’s lack of success in this area just might be because they aren’t really in the adoption business at all but are rather in the ideologically driven euthanasia business.

“they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to.” Just like humans themselves, unless you’re Diogenes the Cynic.
I can’t imagining my shih-tzus doing too well if I dump them in a forest. So they must die now by my hand.

PETA is annoying but they have no power. People freak out about PETA like this group is just days away from gaining political power and ending meat eating or some such.

Also, there is a very bad pet problem in the States. As annoying as PETA’s ideology is to me, I saw a commercial where a dog food company was calling pet owners “Pet Parents”. How is that for a mind fuck from the pet mill industry and the genetic damage this does to animals?
