Irish Nationalist Leader Blasts Margaret Thatcher, Even After Her DeathGerry Adams, the president of Sinn Féin, released the following statement on the death of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher:
“Margaret Thatcher did great hurt to the Irish and British people during her time as British Prime Minister.Working class communities were devastated in Britain because of her policies.
Her role in international affairs was equally belligerent whether in support of the Chilean dictator Pinochet, her opposition to sanctions against apartheid South Africa; and her support for the Khmer Rouge.
Here in Ireland her espousal of old draconian militaristic policies prolonged the war and caused great suffering. She embraced censorship, collusion and the killing of citizens by covert operations, including the targeting of solicitors like Pat Finucane, alongside more open military operations and refused to recognize the rights of citizens to vote for parties of their choice.
Her failed efforts to criminalize the republican struggle and the political prisoners is part of her legacy.
It should be noted that in complete contradiction of her public posturing, she authorized a back channel of communications with the Sinn Féin leadership but failed to act on the logic of this.
Unfortunately she was faced with weak Irish governments who failed to oppose her securocrat agenda or to enlist international support in defense of citizens in the north.
Margaret Thatcher will be especially remembered for her shameful role during the epic hunger strikes of 1980 and 81.
Her Irish policy failed miserably”.

Upding was for agreement with Gerry Adams. On the whole, Thatcher was pretty damned bad for the Irish peace process…and I cannot fathom why anybody in their right mind would have had anything good to say about a blood drenched, murderous nut like Pinochet.

I would agree, but Gerry Adams is not much better. The Irish Taoiseach has seen fit to accuse of Terrorism, after all. Britain did some nasty things in Northern Ireland, especially under Thatcher. But the IRA and its mutations were worse.

There is less hero worship of politicians in Britain; compare how Thatcher is viewed critically versus how Reagan is almost deified, even by his political opponents.

Ain’t that the truth.

I think Americans who are kind of isolated from news as it is around the world probably are kind of surprised or shocked at this because none of these negative reactions to Thatcher (or positive reaction if you want to look at it that way) has been reported in the Stateside news (at least in the news I saw).
If anything Thatcher’s death is an excuse for 1980s nostalgia before they break for commercial to sell viagra or some such medication.

Thatcher is hated in the north of England for two things especially:
1) Her anti-worker “free market” policies destroyed much of the north’s economic output.
2) She was heavily associated with the right-wing press’s vilification of football fans in the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy in which scores of Liverpool fans were crushed to death largely due to police incompetence. The press essentially blamed the fans for the disaster, abetted the police in covering up their part in it, and in one infamous case falsely accused survivors of urinating on the corpses of their fellow fans.
As a human being I’m sorry she’s died, but I’d be a lot more sorry if she had shown some empathy for the poor during her time on earth. If northerners want to send her off with a giant “fuck you” I don’t have a particular problem with that.
