A federal appeals court has upheld the dismissal of a nationally watched lawsuit in which students in a conservative Roswell religious group challenged school officials’ response to their handing out rubber fetuses.

The 10th Circuit of Appeals ruled Monday that a federal magistrate judge was correct in ruling that the Roswell Independent School District had the authority to stop the distribution of 2-inch rubber fetuses at Goddard and Roswell high schools in 2010.

Can someone who understands this case and the ruling explain to me how this isn’t a violation of their free speech?

For pretty much the same reason you cannot yell “fire” in a crowded theater. You have a right to free speech. But your right ends when your speech causes a disruption to the school that impairs the schools function to perform its duties.

From page 13 of the lengthy document:

As we explain below, Plaintiffs’ free speech challenges fail because school officials reasonably forecasted that the distribution would cause substantial disruption and because the distribution did cause substantial disruption.Plaintiffs’ free exercise and equal protection claims fail because the decision to stop the distribution was not based on religion, and Plaintiffs failed to show they were treated differently from similarly situated students

I haven’t read the ‘as explained below’ part.
