But we don’t need unions! We have plenty of labor laws to protect us! /s

I”m betting the free pizza they get is what the paying customers leave on the plate.

So I am guessing that since its classed as an unpaid internship this is 100 percent legal?

Hey! Slaves improve the bottom line. That’s the only important thing. ///

It’s silly, but it’s hardly slave labor. They’re asking for volunteers and people are free to sign up for it or not as they choose.
Whether it is in compliance with labor law is a question I can’t answer.

Indentured Servitude then?

Were there articles of indenture referred to in the ad? Still sounds more like Tom Sawyer and whitewashing the fence to me. :)

This is America, you get paid actual money for a hard days work here, at least you used to. Unless it is a charity where no one is making any money this should be illegal. Even if it isn’t illegal it is still wrong and exploitative.

re: #8 Christopher’s Bitchins

I’m not sure who is being exploited unless they are promising something other than free pizza, like a leg up on a real job. That would be exploitative.

I would just think people would laugh at the offer and move on, but perhaps there is something I’m missing. And as I said before, I have no idea whether an “internship” of that nature is legal.

I think I am with Calochortus on this one. It is a neighborhood business that has a an urban garden which they probably only run a few months a year anyhow. It sounds like they already employ a gardener which is really all you need for a lot that size. I think more than anything they were thinking “hey, wouldn’t it be nice if we could teach some of the neighborhood kids how to tend a garden”

Plus they are throwing in free pizza. I don’t know, stop by for a couple hours after school, learn how to garden and get free food doesn’t exactly sound like slavery to me. It isn’t exactly busting your hump 10 hours a day out in the field picking fruit.

re: #10 danarchy

Taken in isolation it sounds like its not that big a deal but if you read about such things you would find that the internship program has become pretty much a slave labor force in these hard times. Above that level is the trend of hiring of employees on a part time basis to prevent benefits being paid. Last but not least is making full time employees do more work for less pay.

If you had a post deleted, it must have been on another thread. They don’t disappear, they show this: [deleted]
