Well, he did apologize to The Jews and then praise their business acumen, so there’s that.

Okla. Lawmaker Apologizes For Anti-Semitic Slur, Then Concedes Jews Are ‘Good Small Businessmen’

Shortly after invoking the derogatory phrase, Johnson appeared to be notified by someone off camera that what he said was offensive.

“I apologize to the Jews,” Johnson said, drawing laughter from the chamber. “They’re good small businessmen as well.”

A spokesman for state Speaker of the House T.W. Shannon (R) defended Johnson, telling the Tulsa World that the “chamber accepted his apology and has moved on.” As the Tulsa World noted, there are no Jewish members of the Oklahoma legislature.

His “apology” is a non-apology. He opened his mouth, inserted his boot, and then exacerbated it by further sticking his boot in his mouth. There are probably quite a few Oklahomans who believe this “person” is truly apologetic.

Funny thing is, I had this happen to me once, while on active duty in the Navy. I was stationed with an air training squadron in Mississippi. My commanding officer was talking about a meeting with the Chief of Naval Air Training he had just had where they had discussed the Pilot Training Requirement for the new fiscal year. The CO said he was able to “Jew down” the squadron requirements from 45 to 36. As soon as he said it, every officer in the room (and there were over 100) turned to look at me, the only Jew in the squadron and one of maybe a dozen on a base of 3000 people. The CO realized his gaffe and said words to the effect, “I get the feeling you and I are going to have a little talk after this meeting, Michael,” to which I merely replied, “Yes, sir.” He then profusely apologized to me. I explained to him that I understood that what he did was more a cultural thing than an anti-Jewish thing. Thing is, he was truly apologetic. The politician in Oklahoma wasn’t.
