They did right. Thanks for posting this.

I don’t get it, they were just being normal citizens, why is it news? Shouldn’t we expect them to report it?

re: #2 rosiee

You’re right, in a perfect world it shouldn’t be considered news, but Muslims have to make sure it is, otherwise the usual suspects will be claiming they never report anything. Just like the claims that Muslims don’t speak out against terrorism, when in fact they have been doing so for years.

re: #3 CuriousLurker

And even so, I’m guessing this won’t be front page news for many people. They’ll still run around screaming that Muslims are staying silent.

5 stabby  Tue, Apr 23, 2013 8:23:15am

It’s news because:
1) if we follow the right winger nutjob’s advice and elect leaders who denounce Islam at every chance, then this will stop happening. It is the help of Muslims who protect us from terrorism, not only at home but all over the world.
2) you should be aware of the Muslim extremists who make speeches AGAINST giving help. It’s pretty common at the East London Mosque, for instance.

I’m curious how the Islamaphobes will process ignore this tidbit.

Pffft, piece of cake:

TAQIYYA!!11! It’s a ruse—they’re just trying to get you to let your guard down so they can take over!

Or:

CONSPIRACY!!11! The leftist, Islamofascist-loving dhimmis and their lying media cohorts are covering up for those savages!

Double awesome. Any effort to expose these terrorist pukes and nail them, big thumbs up.

If the Muslims ever take over, it’s only because we Elders of Zion are manipulating their puppet strings. //

Still a deafening silence of the Muslim community on Iranian and Arab anti-semitism. Only a few notable voices, off the top of my head, Irshad Manji and Tarek Fatah are vocal critics of it.

13 CuriousLurker  Tue, Apr 23, 2013 8:27:45pm

re: #12 rosiee

I’m not sure which “Muslim community” you’re referring to—the US, North America, Europe, the West in general, worldwide? I’m trying to figure out exactly which Muslim community you feel is responsible for combating Iranian & Arab anti-Semitism.

Anyway, here’s a sampling of the statements I could find quickly using Google that aren’t from Irshad Manji or Tarek Fatah:

US: Muslims condemn anti-Semitic article

US: U.S. Muslim leaders condemn Holocaust denial

US: U.S. Arab group slams Holocaust deniers

Canada: Canadian Muslims Condemn Alleged anti-Semitic attack

Britain: We unreservedly condemn attacks on the Jewish community

Europe: Willingness of Muslim leaders to denounce anti-Semitsm

Is there anti-Semitism within our community (I’m referring to the US Muslim community as that’s the only one I have direct knowledge of)? Yes, there most certainly is. It’s wrong and we need to put a stop to it, which is exactly what some people are trying to do.

Just curious: How is Iranian & Arab anti-Semitism related to a story about Canadian Muslims tipping off the RCMP about a terror plot?

‘Our teachings embrace and celebrate Canadian values’: Toronto Mosque condemns criticism of Islamic schoolre: #14 CuriousLurker

Islamic school apologizes for anti-Semitic material on website

It’s something that Islam has to come to grips with.

I mean, it’s part of the whole fascination with conspiracy theories we see endemic in the mid-east, in Arab and Turkish bookstores Mein Kampf is a best seller, Perhaps when these conspiracy theories are beaten with the stick of reason the whole conflict, the stranglehold of ignorance, can be brought to an end. These terrorists have conspiracy addled brains. They are conspirtards that happen to be Muslims.

re: #15 rosiee

As I’ve already said, I’m not denying there are problems with anti-Semitism, but I’m still not clear what the connection is supposed to be between any of that and the story VB posted.

The Canadian Shia’ mosque/school in the articles you referenced doesn’t appear to be the same one that reported the terror plot, so can you please explain what it is that I’m missing here…?

The Iman of the Mosque, Heft, in 2009 started a program Toronto mosque offers detox for islamic radicals
yet still says

Heft said there are many sects in Islam, and that “99.9” per cent of Islamic leaders across the country agree they must work together to combat extremism.

is there not a state of denial prevalent? Perhaps wishful thinking?

I really don’t get what you’re unhappy about.

A Muslim community in Canada reported a potential terrorist and most likely saved many innocent lives in doing so. Your first response was “…why is it news? Shouldn’t we expect them to report it?” Okay, I even updinged you for that and explained why they need to speak out.

Then, out of nowhere, you came up with, “Still a deafening silence of the Muslim community on Iranian and Arab anti-semitism.”

So I ask you what that has to do with the story at hand and I give you several examples of Western Muslim leaders/communities denouncing anti-Semitism & Holocaust denial, admitting that there are still problems. Your response? “But, anti-Semitism at a Shia school in Canada, and Mein Kampf is a bestseller in Turkish & Arab bookstores in the mid-east!”

So I ask you AGAIN what what any of those things have to do with story at hand. Your response? You tell me that the imam of that mosque is committed to combating extremism, but since he said that 99.9% of Islamic leaders in Canada agree they need to work together to combat said extremism, then… “He’s in denial!”

WTF? I would think people would be happy that this guy is stepping up and being proactive. Goes to show how little I know.

It’s pretty clear to me now that NOTHING any Canadian Muslim says or does is going to satisfy you, so that concludes this discussion for me. Goodbye.

Thanks, I need one. Taking the time to respond to someone in good faith only to have them DERP back at me repeatedly seriously chaps my hide.

I wish people could just have honest fucking discussions instead of always trying to derail things lest Muslims get any credit for doing something positive.

Yet another reason that Islamophobia is incredibly stupid. It actually fosters terrorism. If the majority mistreats any minority (Muslim or otherwise) radical elements in that minority will tend to gain influence.

Rather idiotic to pursue such a public policy.

Exactly. All it does is foster resentment and exacerbate the problem.*

We’re back to that whole problem of nuance in public discussion. Which these days seems to be a completely vanished concept.

re: #18 CuriousLurker

Do you believe 99.9 percent of Islamic leaders in Canada agree with this Imam? Sorry but there is denial in the Muslim community about how deep the problem goes. By the way, I laud brave Muslims who have the balls to stand up to the silent majority. In any event, it’s not a knock on your religion which is just as kooky as Judaism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Aryan mother-goddess worship, whatever, It’s the culture of conspiracy theory that is taking in young Muslim men. Family Says Boston Marathon Explosions Suspect Was Interested in ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ I’m trying to pick the mind of a rational and upstanding Muslim (you). I’m trying to understand not to defame.

Lets assume, for the sake of argument, that only 95% of Islamic leaders in Canada agree with this Imam. If this were true, it wouldn’t really change things very much — violent extremism would still be unrepresentative of the vast majority of Canadian Muslims.

If you want to make a case that violent extremism _is_ representative of Canadian Muslims, you’ll need to do a lot more than nit-pick at the 99.9 percent number.

re: #27 EPR-radar

Of course, Muslims are mostly peaceful, I never said that they weren’t I said that there was a silence of the majority. Especially against anti-Israeli vitriol. When Suharto stands up and accuses the Jews of controlling the world, an Indonesian, what does that tell you? Has he ever met a Jew in Indonesia? These Ideas are transmitted by a culture.
